It’s really disheartening to see so many highly qualified non-native English teachers being overlooked just because of their nationality. These educators often have exceptional proficiency and extensive teaching experience, yet they're frequently offered significantly lower salaries compared to native speakers. This bias not only undervalues their hard work and expertise but also robs students of diverse and enriching learning experiences. Non-native English teachers, having personally navigated the challenges of learning English as a second language, bring unique insights and empathy to their teaching. They truly understand the struggles of ESL students and can connect with them on a deeper level, making them especially effective educators. Being a "non-native" English speaker, I have experienced the ups and downs of the bias within the hiring process firsthand. It’s time for schools and institutions worldwide to adopt a more inclusive approach. Let's recognize that skilled and educated individuals, regardless of nationality, can teach English effectively and inspire students globally. For several years I taught English as a Second Language. At any given point of the day, I could have Kindergarteners all the way up to Seniors in high school. Some of them knew a lot of English and were almost ready to be out of the program. Most were Intermediate level. They knew a lot of conversational English but needed help building their academic vocabulary and skills. And some knew absolutely no English. Not a word. Not a letter. Nothing. These were some of my favorite students to work with. Because they required intensity - They were passing through their days in a fog of overstimulation and confusion. Imagine being in a fun house for 8 hours of your day. And being expected to learn. That was what school can be like for Beginning ESL students. I worked hard to make my classroom calm and soothing. I made sure to go slowly and systematically to find a way into their learning. It was building a connection with the student. Letting them see that they could trust me. And eventually, it would happen. I would see the spark of understanding. The connection between the word they know and its English counterpart. And that would be the way in for their learning. We built everything from that first word. I wasn't the most skilled teacher - But I did know how important connection is for them. Some online teachers say you don’t need to learn grammar as an ESL speaker. The reason is that native English speakers didn’t learn grammar as children. They immerse in the language and become fluent. Respectfully, I disagree. Grammar instruction is crucial for adults. Our brains lose some plasticity with age, making it harder to absorb language naturally like children do. Adults benefit more from explicit grammar instruction than they do from immersion alone. Adults excel in analytical thinking and learning strategies. That makes explicit grammar rules more effective. Understanding grammar helps you recognise and correct your mistakes, leveraging our ability as adults to self-correct and learn efficiently. While immersion helps, don’t skip the grammar lessons if you’re serious about English fluency. It helps you achieve fluency faster.

The debate over the advantages and disadvantages of these two categories of teachers has been ongoing, and it's worth exploring. 🤔💼 🌟 Native English Teachers: Often have a natural grasp of idiomatic expressions and nuances.
