Almost every student in government schools aspires to be able to confidently speak in English. Even if they struggle to read, write and understand English, they rarely can muster the courage to speak in English. Sadly, their dreams and aspirations are ignored and often debilitated by substandard delivery. A girl said to me, "Sir, ham English seek nahi paaye, kyunki koi seekhane wala hi nahi hai." We believe that in this globalized world, English is a must-to-learn language (along with our native languages) to stay more relevant and updated and to exploit more opportunities📚 Therefore, Gurucool wants to put a special focus on English in its curriculum for the students in rural India. Is the preference for native English speakers in teaching roles a form of modern-day discrimination? As someone from a post-colonized nation, I find it troubling that even with qualifications such as BA or MA degrees in English, certifications like IELTS or TOEFL, and relevant teaching experience, non-native English speakers from regions like South Asia often face significant barriers in securing teaching positions—especially in places like the Middle East. Despite their extensive qualifications and experience, the preference for native speakers persists, raising serious questions about educational equity and the lingering effects of colonialism in global hiring practices. Why is it that qualifications and experience alone aren't always enough, and what does this say about our attitudes toward non-Western perspectives in education? I have been a victim of national origin discrimination. Back in 2019, I decided to infuse my love for English and teaching together and do a TEFL course. i.e., Teaching English as a Foreign Language. I joined a program that gave me the opportunity to teach in Thai schools. Little did I know, Id face blunt rejection. During our meeting with one of the school principals, We were told that they don’t hire “Indian teachers.” My honest reaction was asking, Why? Turns out, because we don’t have an accent. Can you imagine? Being refused a job opportunity because you don’t sound like a native English speaker. It was disheartening, to say the least. I wonder why we continue to judge proficiency based on accents rather than skills and passion? Honestly, I look forward to a day when all educators are valued for their dedication to teaching, regardless of their background or accent. P.S. Have you ever faced similar biases in your career? In India, government initiatives have realized the importance of early English teaching in schools by introducing bridge courses. This clearly shows a change in educational focus on communication abilities, more so in English, especially at tender ages. This is because fluency in the English language enables one to communicate effectively and thus has numerous advantages, ranging from better job opportunities to easy access to information and resources. Bridge courses introduced in public schools by policymakers are therefore a response to urgent need; they are preparing students with the language skills necessary to survive in today's world, where everything is interconnected. Again, some people might be asking themselves if this increased focus on English is a good thing or a bad thing. That’s why it makes sense: given the country’s linguistic diversity and the significance of preserving regional languages and cultures. However, the fact remains that English has become the global lingua franca, which allows for cross border communication as well as cooperation. When they offer bridge courses in English, government schools do not exclude any other languages, such as those spoken regionally, but rather emphasize bilingualism. By doing this, children can still learn their mother tongues while also being able to speak English well enough for them to complete their schooling. #earlychildhoodeducation #communication #scert #bridgethegap
