One of my students from DU sent me this picture of the vacancy ad of KIIT, Bhubaneshwar published in TOI Ascent, Delhi edition, and asked why did they publish this ad in Odia language in a national newspaper? They could have published such an ad in TOI Odisha edition or any other local newspaper. As it is a language ad, not other people can read it. So is it not the waste of money? I gave her an answer that constituted following points: 1- No, it is not a waste of money, but a strategy to reach to the 'Odia-bhashi' people from across India who are eligible to fill the vacant posts. 2- This ad gatekeeps any person who might be eligible for the post but does not know Odia language as through this ad the recruiter wants to ensure that the candidate who is applying for the post should know Odia language (Or should be a native of Odisha). 3. the ad also communicates that the preference will be given to an Odia person. 4. Language has many roles to play. It does not only communicate, it connects, it gatekeeps, it also symbolizes commonality among people of a certain social, geographic, demographic or psychographic construct. 5. This ad is an example of how one uses language to connect and communicate to certain people. This is my understanding of the issue. I realised I haven’t blown my trumpet about the art walks I began leading for Alisha Sadikot and Nishita Z.’s #ArtandWonderment since the end of 2022. But this is also a #SteveJobs moment of #connectingthedots. My first set of walks was at the Asian Paints Mumbai Urban Arts Festival organised by St+art India and next at the first ever edition of Art Mumbai. Both were significant in imparting vital lessons about speaking to a myriad of audiences, including, and especially, students and young adults. Not only did both instances push me to calibrate *what* (content curation) I told them, but also *how* (tone and language mix) I chose to speak with them. Since my lectures at The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda’s Faculty of Social Work (FSW), MSU Baroda, my exposure to young audiences had been limited to School of COmmunications & REputation. All of these eclectic research, and ultimately public speaking, experiences have led me to internalise lesson plans and make analogies examples come alive for my students. More recently, I’m sure you saw pictures from my Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (CSMVS) visit with the latest batch of students as well, which opened a whole world of shared experience that I get to cite and quote from over and over in varied modules in class.
