🚨 Crackdown: Up to 30% of Timber at Australian Ports Could be Illegal ⚓ Australia is taking significant steps to combat illegal logging and ensure the sustainability of its timber industry. Recent studies reveal that up to 30% of timber entering Australian ports may be illegally sourced, prompting a nationwide effort to enhance timber traceability and enforcement. 🔎 What You Need to Know: 1️⃣ Addressing a Major Issue: The Australian government's Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry has concluded a timber testing trial to investigate the origins of timber products. The results indicated that approximately 25% of the tested products had inconsistencies with declared species or origins, highlighting the urgent need for better compliance mechanisms. 2️⃣ Strengthening Legislation: Australia is revising its Illegal Logging Prohibition Regulation in response to global pressures, including the EU's new deforestation laws. The proposed Illegal Logging Prohibition Amendment Bill 2024 aims to boost enforcement powers and improve the detection of illegal timber trade at ports, protecting the environment and the economy. 3️⃣ Investment in Technology: To enhance traceability, Australia is investing $4.4 million in DNA testing, which will contribute to the establishment of the World Forest Identification Database. This initiative seeks to create the world’s largest forest identification database, ensuring timber products are sourced legally and sustainably. 🔗 To learn more about the crackdown on illegal timber trade and the steps being taken to secure Australia’s timber industry, click here: https://lnkd.in/gVUJ_dQt 🗣️ #questionforgroup: What additional measures can be implemented to combat illegal logging and enhance the sustainability of timber supply chains? This isn't new news, unfortunately. It's time for the government to take a proactive stance and invest in solutions that address the timber supply crisis. Imagine the potential if we channelled significant funding into regenerative resources and the development of new industries right here in Australia. Bamboo stands out as a prime example. Australia even has native bamboos that could be leveraged to support local ecosystems and industry. As the fastest-growing land plant, bamboo offers a renewable, carbon-sequestering material comparable to timber. Unlike traditional forestry, it regenerates without deforestation and captures up to four times more carbon than trees, storing it within its rhizome system. Beyond environmental benefits, fostering a bamboo industry would create jobs and bolster Australia's economic resilience. The long-term gains are undeniable. Let’s embrace change and invest in sustainable solutions that benefit our future. It’s a no-brainer. #Peru's first #anchovy season fuels global surge in #fishmeal production. 🐟 📈 Global cumulative output of fishmeal grew by 36% and #fishoil by 10% in the first half of 2024, compared with the same period last year, according to data released by IFFO – The Marine Ingredients Organisation. This was in large part driven by Peru's exceptionally strong first anchovy fishing season in the North-Central region. 📌 However, challenges remain due to weakened demand from China, the IFFO notes. Despite an increase in fishmeal #imports through August, domestic consumption has remained sluggish, while fishmeal stocks in Chinese ports reached record levels in September 2024. ✨ Read more on this story here 👉 https://lnkd.in/d_B8Mdis

🌲🌳 Wood is being used in many applications as it is great material for its good availability, reasonable cost with great machining properties in addition to good strength to weight ratio. There is also long traditions to use wood. 🌐 Timber trade is global business taking place all over the world which sometimes makes it difficult to know what is the initial source for the material and what kind of forest management activities are taking place at the origin country. The EU Regulation ⚖ on Deforestation-free Products (EUDR) is setting new standards for knowing from where and how wood, in its different formats, is harvested. 🔍Sourcing materials from responsible industry players with transparent and short supply chains, makes it easy to secure all needed steps of the EUDR are being followed and material are not causing deforestation or forest degradation at their origin. We at UPM Plywood are prepared for the coming regulation. There is link 🔗 on the comments below to find out how we are preparing. Below there is a picture of a trailer that has a keruing hardwood floor, also called as "Asian Mahogany". Keruing is still today popular material also for many other applications like floors for shipping containers, applications in joinery etc. Keruing is wood that is growing in Southeast Asia and it has most recently been assessed for The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species in 2019. With coming EUDR, among other products, wood products can be placed on the EU market only if: ◽ they are deforestation and forest degradation-free; ◽ they have been produced in accordance with the relevant legislation of the country of production; ◽ and they are covered by a due diligence statement (DDS) ❔ The requirements for the parties acting in the supply chain are increasing. Is your business prepared? #EUDR #timbertrade #deforestation #responsibility
