Wow, 1 decade . Shout out to Restorasi Ekosistem Riau (RER)'s team whom worked tirelessly to protect the nature and biodiversity. Not an easy journey, for sure. Together we have learned over the past decade that tropical peat swamp forest restoration takes a great deal of time and COLLECTIVE action. Restorasi Ekosistem Riau (RER) is one of the WORLD's largest and most ecologically significant tropical peat swamp restoration projects. Proudly say, RER is now a proven model of tropical ecosystem restoration and an example of what can be achieved anywhere through the combined application of science and corporate (APRIL) commitment. It's timely to consider how RER's blueprint can be applied to OTHER restoration efforts in Indonesia and also as nature-based solution globally. The final phase of upgrades to the iconic Wadjemup / Rottnest Island Main Jetty has been completed. This vital project is a part of the State Government’s $26.8 million investment to upgrade and improve essential maritime infrastructure and delivers on a key initiative of the Rottnest Island Management Plan 2023-28. The Main Jetty completion will extend the operational life of the jetty and enhance the visitor experience by providing a more streamlined and efficient arrival and departure experience for all visitors to the island. In addressing water challenges in Bali, Kopernik is supporting the Bali Watershed Management Coordination Forum (FORDAS Bali) to coordinate water preservation efforts among various stakeholders, aiming for integrated watershed management on the island. This initiative targets critical lands in the midstream to upstream areas of the Ayung watershed, one of Bali's major water sources spanning five regencies and one city. These areas are often compromised due to factors such as excessive groundwater extraction, reduced water reserves, and water and soil contamination. To sustain these efforts, we have implemented a Payment For Environmental Services (PES) system, compensating individuals or organizations for the environmental services they provide. Focused Cleaning in Full Swing. Call for Volunteers for Next Phase Focused Cleaning in Full Swing All the affected areas, including Sentosa Tanjong beach, have entered the second phase of the clean-up response, which focuses on difficult-to-clean areas like rock bunds, breakwaters, and oil trapped deeper in the sand. The cleaning methods for the second phase are decided jointly by the oil spill consultants and cleaning contractors. These methods will be adapted and refined as required, as the shoreline features of affected areas may differ. For biodiversity-sensitive sites, to minimise impact, strategies such as allowing for natural flushing may be adopted. Members of the public may notice a scaling down of general cleaning at the affected beaches, as more specialised teams are deployed to clean these difficult areas. General cleaning of the beaches may still be required, as oil remnants may continue to be washed ashore. The washing of berths at Pasir Panjang Container Terminal is about 20% completed with the estimated completion date by end July 2024. Explore the journey of how the new 180-meter-long, 30-meter-wide dock was constructed and transported to Tallinn between November 2022 and May 2024. At the dock's grand opening, Estonian Minister of Economic Affairs and Industry, Erkki Keldo, remarked:   “The commissioning of BLRT Grupp's new high-performance floating dock is a clear sign that Estonian industrial companies are committed to investing locally and are confident in the future. This project significantly contributes to the development of new infrastructure and technologies, while also fostering a more sustainable and environmentally friendly maritime industry in Estonia. As a company, we’re continually looking at innovative global solutions that improve the boating experience. Therefore, it’s always encouraging to see how new technologies and solutions are brought to market. One such example is a pilot programme for sustainable marine fuels launched this month at St Andrews Marina in Panama City, Florida, in partnership with NMMA, Hyperfuels and Suzuki Marine. Florida is the number one boating state in the U.S., with more than one million registered boats and generating US$31 billion for the state’s economy annually. As the maritime industry looks to further decarbonise and reduce emissions, the transitional shift lies in making these solutions more accessible to the recreational boating public at marinas and fuel docks. Sargablocks: Transforming Invasive Seaweed into Sustainable Housing Solutions for Mexican Communities Mexico is finding an innovative way to tackle the environmental challenge posed by sargassum, an invasive seaweed that clutters beaches and threatens marine ecosystems. Omar Vázquez Sánchez, also known as “Mr. Sargassum,” has developed a unique solution by using this abundant seaweed to create bricks, known as "sargablocks." These bricks, which are composed of about 40% sargassum combined with organic materials, are affordable and highly resilient, even withstanding hurricanes and tropical storms. The production process requires minimal water and relies on sun drying, which reduces environmental impact. By collecting sargassum from the coasts of Quintana Roo, Vázquez's business not only helps clean beaches but also creates jobs and provides low-cost housing to local communities.
