The impact that the physical environment has on the birthing experience cannot be overstated. In recent years, nature-inspired design has become a major trend in maternity ward design utilising the principles of biophilic design to create a calming environment. Our nature-inspired displays are perfect for maternity wards as they can improve the birthing experience by reducing anxiety, enhancing comfort, and creating a positive distraction. As part of a pre-birth course, I was just sitting in the corner of this room, listening to how the room environment was carefully designed to ensure that when a mother gives birth, she doesn't feel like she is in a typical hospital room surrounded by medical equipment. Instead, the space aims to feel a safe, 'natural' place where the oxytocin, or happy hormones can rise. The term 'tværfaglig'- interdisciplinary, is something I often hear at work, but this time I experienced it in a completely different context: in a state-of-the-art birthing room at Regionshospitalet Gødstrup. If you could just hear my thoughts, I was just shocked to hear the long list of so different professions who contributed to designing the room. Midwives - Their childbirth experience ensures the design supports both the mother and medical staff, focusing on natural births. Doctors - They ensure the design meets medical and safety standards, especially for emergencies. Nurses - Their input ensures efficient workflows and a calming environment for patient care. Architects - They design a functional and aesthetically pleasing birthing room. Interior Designers - They create a visually comforting, serene space, reducing the clinical feel. Lighting Designers - They design soft, adaptable lighting to reduce stress during labor. Psychologists - They ensure the design supports the mother’s mental well-being, promoting relaxation. Scenographers - They design sensory elements like visuals and sound to create a calming atmosphere. Feng Shui Experts - They ensure the room’s energy flow promotes harmony and calmness. Anthropologists - They design a space that feels inclusive for women of different backgrounds. Game Developer - They help create an interactive environment with adjustable lighting, sound, and visuals. Special Forces Soldier - Their insights aid in designing a space that supports calm under pressure. Animal Keepers – They offer insights into stress-free environments to help create a calming atmosphere. & a lots of Data from mothers, and not only. With a strong focus on tasks over status, cooperation is ingrained in the Danish culture. This, along with lots of trust, fosters an environment where remarkable things happen. Anyway, I’ll soon have to soldier through in that room for at least 👶👶 good reasons. I should hope I am a good team asset ;) Source: Jordemoderforeningen #design #teamwork #danishculture #life

Interesting Info Where the whole of Europe is trying to redesign farrowing pens to combine liberty for sows with no crushing, Australia’s SunPork Group introduced a different type of solution: maternity rings. The idea was properly researched before its launch. https://ow.ly/MhrX50TZ3E0

The recent #SheBuildsNation 2024 report revealed a concerning reality. Based on the survey conducted with 100 women in construction, a whopping 85% reported a lack of maternity-friendly safety equipment. Safety is paramount, and that should extend to protecting ALL our workers. Maternity PPE is a crucial piece of the puzzle, ensuring expecting mothers can continue their careers comfortably and confidently. Read more about the need for maternity-friendly safety equipment and other critical issues in the full report here: https://lnkd.in/gagbbEc5 This is just one step towards a more equitable future. Let's keep the conversation going and break down these barriers for #WomeninConstruction!

For those of you in my network that follow the work that Gill Phillips does in Maternity services through her board game Whose Shoes? you will know that we were in Ireland at the end of last year. The visual below was created from the conversations that took place while playing the game. I have captured over a hundred of these conversations over the last 10 years. there are some common themes that come out of every workshop without fail. This includes language, communication, relationships and being person centred. However this workshop stood out because I noticed a subtle shift in the challenges experienced by staff offering support and advice to mothers and their families. The first one is around the increase of Vaping in place of smoking. As health care professionals midwives want to be able raise awareness of the impact that nicotine can have on the unborn baby. It is much easier to have these targeted conversations if you can smell tobacco smoke. Vapes don't carry the same smell so it is more difficult offer support if it is not raised as an issue. The other conversation that I heard for the first time was about the personal use of mobile phones to have hands free conversations with family and friends on the ward. Some of these conversations take place at 2 or 3 in the morning, for all to hear, while others need to get some sleep. I know that phone use is not specific to maternity services. It is experienced in all hospital wards. In both of these conversations I recognise the challenge for staff and the fine line they need to tread to be supportive without being judgmental, and to challenge social norms for the wellbeing of others. I'm wondering what responsibility we should take as individuals, is it fair to expect healthcare professionals to sort it out while they are stretched to the limit already?
