This morning I was preparing a note to my current cohort of U.S. Coast Guard leaders that completed week 3 of the RBLP Leader Certifications Building and Leading Resilient Teams program which discuss “providing purpose.” My thoughts led me to a recent event in my home state of South Carolina. Here’s my message to the cohort: Earlier this week, we engaged in an important discussion about "providing purpose" in the workplace. We explored how a clear sense of purpose can motivate individuals, foster collaboration, and ultimately drive success within an organization. Purpose gives our daily tasks significance; it creates a deeper connection to our work and helps us understand our larger role within a community. To illustrate the complexity of purpose, let's briefly shift our focus to a topic that some may find challenging but is nonetheless important: the recent execution of an inmate convicted of murder in South Carolina. This event, which took place after years of legal battles and debate, demonstrates the various perspectives on justice, redemption, and accountability. In the context of providing purpose, we can ask ourselves: what purpose does this act serve? For some, it might symbolize closure for the victims' families, a way to find peace in the face of tragedy. For others, it may provoke thoughts about the nature of punishment and the potential for rehabilitation. This situation forces us to confront our values and beliefs about justice and morality—how we define purpose in the lives of individuals and within society. As we ponder this, consider how these same themes play out in our daily lives and careers. Just as the state seeks to serve its purpose through the legal process, we can reflect on how our professional roles serve the greater good. Are we contributing to a positive purpose that uplifts others? Are we finding meaning in what we do, and how can we encourage others to discover their own sense of purpose? Let’s take this opportunity to reflect deeply—how can we make our work meaningful not just for ourselves, but for those around us? How can understanding these broader concepts of purpose enhance our engagement in the workplace? Some people compare elite (technical) certifications to martial arts rank. Some technical certifications actually use the term "belt" in their programs. What I find most get wrong, with both martial arts rank, as well as elite certifications, is that people seem to think that acquiring the cert or the rank is the end. Those who keep going know that the cert, or the rank, is only the beginning. I push the people who work at RG Nets, Inc. to acquire certifications for many reasons. Yes, of course, all the obvious ones apply. However, as much as many hate to admit it, the thing the certification really brings about is a standardization of vocabulary. This week we're spotlighting NCEDA member Courtney Ashley! Originally from Denver, NC, she is an alumnus of University of North Carolina Wilmington. Presently, she calls Shelby her home, where she serves as the Executive Director for Cleveland County Economic Development Partnership. We asked Courtney five questions to get to know her better: 1. What do you love the most about your job? A: Cleveland County has been my home for the past seven years, and I couldn't be more honored to step into this role where I'll have the opportunity to contribute to the economic vibrancy of my own community. 2. What is your go-to comfort food? A: French fries and ice cream - the perfect combination of salty and sweet! 3. How did you get into the field of economic development? A: I have worked in local government for the majority of my career, and I love the feeling that I am actively contributing to the place where I live, work and play. It's exciting to be a part of the positive growth and vitality that economic development brings to your community. 4. What career advice do you live by? A: "If every moment in your life is a lesson, then every person you have met was a teacher." Whether it's a passing remark from a stranger or a profound insight shared by a friend, each interaction presents an opportunity for enlightenment. 5. What is your favorite place that you have traveled? A: I count it as a traveling destination even though I also lived there for five years, but Wilmington will always have the most special place in my life. #NCEDA #EconomicDevelopment
