There is a preconceived notion that Product Managers must come from a technical background to be successful. It's not true! As a Product Manager, your curiosity, and ability to learn, adapt, and evolve to new surroundings, are what separates the great from the average. Leadership, communication, commercial acumen, relationship management, etc. are a must if you are to cut it with the best and be successful. And these "soft skills" are what I look for and assess when I'm working with folks in the PM world. Yes, some companies will prefer certain backgrounds or domain knowledge, and in some cases, it's advantageous to have strength in these areas, but if the PM doesn't have it and is a master of their craft, they'll be able to pick it up. Some of the most experienced and respected CPOs, HoPs and Product Managers I've spoken with over the years have worked across a breadth of industries and have a wide range of backgrounds. Their wide range of backgrounds and experience is a plus, not a negative. The major upside is that these individuals will bring fresh thinking and new ways of working to any company they join. Different backgrounds and experiences will help challenge bias and stagnant thinking which helps drive innovation and growth for a company. Demand for Senior and Principal level Product Managers remains high and are some of the most sought-after for the last 12 months. In addition to the above, Individuals with AI, Growth, GTM, domain expertise, and strong Product Management experience are also in demand and command higher salaries. We cover Product Manager to Chief Product Officer level searches for companies across the USA and are engaged for Senior level IC searches more than any other. Why? Most Senior or Principal level Product Managers have a breadth of skills which means companies can rely on these hires to hit the ground running quicker and reduce the need for product leadership hierarchy (reducing the need for group/lead/director level hires). With more and more companies running leaner teams these types of hires are highly desirable but not easy to come by. I expect we'll see a continuation of this throughout 2024. The Unique Challenge of Hiring a Product Manager, it’s a uniquely complex task. Unlike many roles, it requires a unique blend of diverse skills and a specific mindset, making the selection process both critical and challenging. When hiring a PM, it’s essential to look beyond technical skills and past experience. Evaluate their ability to think strategically, empathize with users, analyze data, and lead cross-functional teams. It’s about finding someone who can envision a product's future and execute a roadmap to get there. Having conducted numerous interviews for new PMs, I can confirm that making a hiring decision is never straightforward. Each candidate brings a unique mix of strengths and areas for growth, making it challenging to identify the right fit for your team and product vision. I’ve made some hiring mistakes along the way, and each one has been a learning experience. Sometimes, I focused too much on specific skills and overlooked the importance of mindset and problem-solving approaches. Other times, I underestimated the need for cultural fit and adaptability. When hiring a PM, consider: • Mindset: Seek a growth-oriented mindset, someone eager to learn and adapt in a dynamic environment. • Problem-Solving: Assess their approach to solving complex problems. Do they employ creative and data-driven methods? • Strategic Thinking: Evaluate their capacity to think long-term and align product goals with overarching business objectives. • Data Utilization: Ensure they can effectively leverage data to make informed decisions and validate assumptions.
