Every day, over 4,000 #humanitarian workers in Ukraine risk their lives to deliver lifesaving assistance to those devastated by the war. World Vision's Communications Officer Oleksandr Shpygunov is on the ground in Zaporizhzhia, southeast Ukraine. Today, he takes us through the heart of the crisis. In Zaporizhzhia, the struggle is raw, and the need is overwhelming. Yet, amidst the chaos, World Vision’s local partners deliver household supplies and institutional kits to shelters and displaced families. This project is supported by USAID's Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance (BHA), Acted Ukraine, and the Ukraine Response Consortium. On #WordHumanitarianDay, we honor the courage and resilience of all humanitarians around the world.

Maria Moita, IOM Chief of Mission in Afghanistan, spoke at the 7th Senior Officials Meeting for the People of Afghanistan, taking place in Brussels today. The European Union is a longstanding partner of IOM. Thanks to EU’s support, IOM provided assistance to over 1.2 million Afghans from 2018 to 2023, including returnees, disaster-affected people, and other vulnerable groups. IOM and the EU are also collaborating to address the immense strain on already limited resources in the areas of return, contributing to reintegration, social cohesion, and longer-term solutions for these communities by creating employment opportunities and improving access to basic services. #SomAfghanistan #NexusAfghanistan

U.S. Pledges $203 Million for Sudan Crisis U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Linda Thomas-Greenfield has announced a $203 million pledge to address the ongoing crisis in Sudan. The funds will provide shelter, cash assistance, and educational support for children affected by the conflict. Thomas-Greenfield highlighted the severe conditions faced by 750,000 people, including vulnerable groups, who are resorting to eating dirt and tree leaves. She urged other nations to contribute and called for renewed efforts to negotiate a peaceful resolution, emphasizing that a military solution is unfeasible. The U.N. has requested $2.7 billion for humanitarian needs but has received only 6% of this amount. #SudanCrisis #USAid #HumanitarianSupport #UN #AfricaWorldReports

IOM has recently organized an event that brought together representatives from ONSA, MOMD, NSS, NIS, TWG, the Global Coalition, UNDP, IN2, UNOPS, and UNICEF. The focus of the discussion was on the importance of strategic communication in the return process of Iraqis from the al-Hol camp in Northeast Syria. The involved authorities thoroughly explained the return journey from al-Hol to J1 and then to areas of origin (AOO), highlighting that the delays in the process are not solely due to the authorities but also many unknown factors contributing to these challenges, such as the unspecified reasons for the Syrian Democratic Forces withholding the departure of the last group of Iraqi families. Attendees also discussed the numerous challenges Iraqi families face both inside J1 and beyond, emphasizing the need for local governments to collaborate in addressing these issues. It was urged that the Government of Iraq should not rely solely on the international community for support after the return, but rather local authorities should play a pivotal role from the outset. Concerns were raised about the rehabilitation process within J1, with some entities suggesting an extension of the stay period or guarantees from the heads of administrative units in each region to ensure families return to their areas of origin. The event underscored the critical need for strategic communication and collaboration among all stakeholders to facilitate the safe and dignified return and reintegration of Iraqis from al-Hol and address the multifaceted challenges they face. #StrategicCommunication #IraqReturns #SafeAndDignifiedReturns #Reintegration #IraqStability #AlHolCamp #LocalGovernmentCollaboration IOM Iraq

This is a particularly interesting issue for those of us who work in the NGO or civil society space. For those of us who operate in these countries we have to ask the question are we doing what is necessary to keep our people safe? Have we taken the steps to advise leadership on the risks? This is a good opportunity to take advantage of the Enterprise Security Risk Management (ESRM) model to provide a objective assessment of the risk and what can be done about it. #asisinternational #ESRM #enterprisesecurityriskmangenent #CSOCenter #NGOSecurity
Humanitarian organisations operating in Sub-Saharan Africa are likely to face persistent state hostility over the coming years. This is based on new laws that curtail the activities of NGOs, our analysis of the continent’s political trajectory and recent conversations with NGO clients that operate there. To reflect where we assess state hostility towards NGOs will probably be particularly acute, we have produced a map of where military coups occurred across Sub-Saharan Africa from 2010-2024. One year into the devastating war in Gaza, Global Communities continues to provide vital humanitarian assistance, despite immense challenges. From delivering clean water and food to supporting healthcare efforts, our work remains crucial as the crisis unfolds. We urge the end of violence of all kinds and on all sides, a recognition of the dignity and common humanity of all people, and strict adherence to humanitarian law. This must include a ceasefire, fundamental to the protection of life and the delivery of humanitarian services; the safety and security of aid workers; the removal of barriers to the delivery of humanitarian assistance; and the safeguarding of all civilians and essential infrastructure.
