Renewable energy projects are often compared to their fossil fuel counterparts in terms of profitability. Bloomberg Green's interview with Brett Chistophers on his book “The Price is Wrong: Why capitalism won’t save the planet” raises an interesting question about whether all one-to-one power purchasing agreement deals without subsidies should be the benchmark for alternative bankability of renewable power projects instead of government support mechanisms. Chistophers notes that not all counterparties are as large as Amazon and Google. Ultimately, for renewable project developers, it's about comparing renewable project with no renewable project, even with low profitability. #RenewableEnergy #Sustainability #GreenEnergy

It's fascinating to see how policies can either accelerate or hinder the adoption of renewable energy. 🌱 While over 100 countries have implemented policies to support this transition, inconsistent regulations are still a major barrier. Uniform and coherent policies are crucial for the seamless adoption of renewable energy on a global scale. 🌍 We need to advocate for more consistent and supportive regulatory frameworks to ensure that renewable energy can thrive and lead us towards a sustainable future. #RenewableEnergy #PolicyMatters #GlobalSustainability

There are many similarities in engagement with carbon and renewable energy markets – but also some important differences. Many models of market engagement - like offtake agreements/PPAs and direct equity investments – were first established in the renewable energy market. They have since been translated to the carbon market and are evolving much faster due to previous learnings. It’s important to recognise however that, unlike renewable energy investments, carbon projects don’t include an infrastructure play. Therefore, these carbon debt and equity structures can’t fall back on the value of the infrastructure asset if energy prices fall. As such, investment in most carbon projects will require an additional layer of innovation and contract-specific methods to manage risk. The CORE Markets team has put together a reference table that captures the key ways to engage the carbon market – for most businesses the optimal strategy will be a blend of these methods. 🌱 If you’re exploring your carbon strategy, get in touch with Abhi Nithyanand who leads our Energy and Environmental Markets Advisory team to see how we can help. ------------- The insights presented here are an extract from our recent article: 📒 Carbon market opportunities: Important lessons from the renewable energy market Read it in full via the link in comments. #SustainabilityJourney #CarbonMarkets #RenewableEnergy #NetZero #EmissionsReduction
