Good morning everyone! Sharing more reflections from the Congressional Black Caucus Annual Legislative Summit. I attended an impactful session on #AI and all the opportunities and challenges it offers us as. This session was so aligned to so many of the things many of us as Black women in tech have been advocating for for years regarding ensuring ethical mass adopting of #AI and safe pathways into the #technology for vulnerable communities. This session left me with so much to think about while hearing from leaders in #BigTech, as well as scholars who have been looking at this issue from a variety of angles. Some things that I am walking away with are: 🌐Technology is developing rapidly and that is often coming at the expense of our community (both from a social standpoint and from a sustainability standpoint). We must ensure that the benefits outweigh the costs to community and that every user is informed of the risk. 🌐Our children need to be utilizing this technology purposefully in the classroom to develop skills for the future, however this must be supported by skilled teachers and professionals who truly understand the tech so they can build meaningful learning experiences. 🌐No tech is perfect because it is powered by people. We must have diverse rooms of not just those in the boardroom, but also those in the labs to ensure that there is dialogue about the tech and products to ensure more equitable outcomes. 🌐Tech is creating a new divide and underclass of people. How does this shift our society? How can we help our schools and districts understand that just putting devices in front of children is not producing technically or digitally literate people? And how do we begin to address a digital poverty within communities across the country? Technology is going to be one the #CivilRights issues of our time. I firmly believe that we, as #educators, are on the frontline of this challenge, too. We have a responsibility to lay the foundation for the future, but we still have a very limited commitment to true tech integration in the classroom. As someone who works deeply in the intersection between technology and citizenship, I believe that this is one of the most important things we can offer our students and we have to start it young. I know that this is a challenge for many with so many competing demands and a varied amount of technological literacy in educators themselves. NURTURING THE NEXT GENERATION OF TECH LEADERS The minds of children are like sponges, absorbing vast amounts of information from their surroundings. The activities they engage in during their formative years play a significant role in shaping their future. Early exposure to technology as a creative tool has proven to have a positive impact on their interests and eventual career choices. Today's tech giants are prime examples of how early childhood exposure to 🤠🙂 technology influences their future. Before they became successful, they were just kids like yours, playing on playgrounds and exploring their interests. Mark Zuckerberg created a messaging program at 14, Bill Gates fell in love with coding at 13, and Jack Dorsey wrote a dispatch software at 15 that is still used today. The common thread among these success stories is early exposure to STEM education, which their parents encouraged. As a result, they created innovations that have transformed the world, made them billionaires, and are used by billions of people. We believe that your kids can achieve similar success, becoming the next generation tech innovators and leaders through fun and creative approaches to learning and development in tech. By giving them the opportunity to explore new skills, they can create something remarkable.

As we continue celebration of Black History Month and highlight the achievements of researchers and innovators in National Science Foundation (NSF) I-Corps and in the National Innovation Network, please join us to celebrate Dr. Legand Burge. Dr. Legand Burge is a Professor of Computer Science and the Executive Director for the Howard West initiative at Howard University. His primary research interest is in distributed computing and its applications in the design and development of social-technical systems. He is currently investigating the design and development of smart spaces to support immersive learning within a classroom, and smart spaces that facilitate the innovation process in distributed teams. Dr. Burge also works with the Howard University Medical School's RCMI Center to utilize historical medical data to develop precision medicine tools to manage, detect, and prevent chronic diseases which affect African Americans. Furthermore, he is also interested in researching design patterns for consensus algorithms for distributed Blockchain solutions. His research has been funded by the NSF, NIH, Dept of Education, DHS, AFSOR, and various industry companies including Amazon and Google. Dr. Burge’s most recently funded project involves the design and development of socio-technology to triage elderly adults who suffer from cognitive decline utilizing ML/AI for Modeling Vocal Prosody and Facial Expressions. Dr. Burge is also interested in computer science education and diversity and technology entrepreneurship and innovation. His work in CS education and diversity has primarily been focused on informal, personalized learning and on the use of technology to aid in the socio-technical enculturation of underrepresented students in CS, K-12 initiatives, and diversity, equity, and inclusion beyond compliance. Dr. Burge practices design thinking as an innovative teaching methodology and promotes immersive learning and learning by doing. He co-teaches the Bison Startup and Bison Accelerate courses co-developed with YCombinator, in which students are guided through the process of founding technology startups. Dr. Burge is a certified Lean Launchpad Educator and Stanford D-School Design Thinker. He is PI for the NSF I-Corps Howard University Site that is part of the Mid Atlantic I-Corps Hub. He is a co-founder of XediaLabs, a DC-based startup studio that provides training and technical consulting to local startups. Dr. Burge has been featured in several articles, radio, and conference panels regarding diversity and inclusion in tech, and conducted a TEDx talk on HBCUs role in the innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem for African Americans. Inspiring Change in the Next Generation This week has been nothing short of extraordinary. I had the privilege of speaking to an incredible group of young women from the STEM Next Opportunity Fund Flight Crew, each representing their home state with pride and purpose. These brilliant teenage girls are on a transformative journey to dismantle stereotypes and ignite a passion for #STEM among their peers through active community engagement. Their energy was palpable, their determination unwavering. It was a room alive with potential, a testament to the power of young minds committed to making a difference. But the inspiration didn't stop there. Over 150,000 Out-of-School time professionals joined us, alongside numerous industry partners, all united in the vision of a more inclusive and diverse future in STEM fields. Reflecting on our journey, it's incredible to see how far we've come since Intel proudly became a founding member of the Million Girls Moonshot four years ago. Today, we celebrate a monumental milestone: over 5.2 million youth and 2.6 million girls have been exposed to the wonders of STEM, thanks to this initiative. This is more than just numbers; it's a narrative of change, of breaking barriers and envisioning a world where every girl has the opportunity to pursue her dreams in #science, #technology, #engineering, and #mathematics. 👩🔬 International Day of Women and Girls in Science, is celebrated annually on February 11th, so this week is not only about love and friendship but also to celebrate the incredible contributions of women and girls in the field of science and technology! 💡♀️ Did you know? 👀 In the tech world, girls are making waves: 1️⃣ Girls who take AP Computer Science in high school are ten times more likely to major in it in college. 2️⃣ By the age of 14, girls are already less interested in pursuing careers in STEM compared to boys. 3️⃣ Only 18% of computer science bachelor's degrees in the US are earned by women.
