Carbon Fibre Composites: Paving the Way to Sustainable Innovation? In our latest article from Anna Demming we explore the journey to harnessing carbon fibre composites as a sustainable solution, and the ongoing research into more sustainable production processes, recycling advancements, and alternative materials that might finally tip the balance and reduce the currently high carbon footprint of these composites. "It’s only in the last decade that we’ve recognised the environmental impact," says Gary Owen, CEO of Lineat Composites. His team is actively exploring recycling methods that preserve up to 85% of the original material's strength, aiming to cut the carbon emissions associated with production by more than two-thirds. The National Composites Centre is tackling production costs and sustainability through research on sustainable precursors like lignin and innovations in processing. According to Tim Young. Chief Technologist at the NCC, “carbon fibre remains costly and energy-intensive,” yet its potential in high-performance applications remains unmatched. Even the alignment of recycled fibres can be a game-changer. As Professor Ian Hamerton from University of Bristol explains, aligning reclaimed fibres is no small feat. Lineat's aligned formable fibre technology (AFFT) is setting new standards for composites that can be moulded into complex shapes while retaining most of their strength. Professor Ton Peijs, Head of the Centre for Polymers and Composites at University of Warwick, points out that alternative materials and recycling technologies may reduce carbon emissions while retaining the high performance required for net-zero applications. Dive into the full article in the comments below to uncover how sustainable innovation in carbon fibre composites could reshape the materials landscape and support global net-zero goals. #Sustainability #CarbonFibre #Innovation #NetZero #CircularEconomy

5moGreat to see the impactful #sustainability LCA work underway in Europe. This will be an important tool and set of precedents for #usmanufacturing too. When the University of California, Berkeley Center for Green Chemistry and Artefact partnered to build an LCA for circular natural composite materials, I will share our frustration with the scarcity of data, models and precedents to reference. Just as a vehicle needs a dashboard to tell how fast it is progressing, the planet needs private / public / academic cooperation on the LCA of key sustainability initiatives. Clearly #circularmaterials and #naturalcompositematerials are two of those key initiatives. Thank you JEC Group and The European Composites Industry Association; EuCIA for moving the global composites industry forward!
