Howden Group Holdings has recently introduced Howden Ventures, pending approval from Lloyd's, to establish an investment and risk incubator that will accelerate the growth of insurance products. This platform includes a delegated underwriting authority, with support from Lloyd's underwriters such as Tokio Marine Kiln, Chaucer, and Liberty Specialty Markets. They are offering £500 million of syndicated underwriting capacity to facilitate the development of new insurance solutions. Additionally, Howden Ventures plans to allocate £10 million in funding to the insurtech sector, focusing on supporting five new startups in the next two years. Their first investment has already been made in CetoAI, a maritime technology company that uses data analytics, engineering, and artificial intelligence to manage the risk of machinery breakdown in global shipping through predictive maintenance. On insurtechs…. Unlike Barry Rabkin, I don’t mind the word insurtech. But to his point, insurtechs are insurance companies and nothing more. I despise the word “disrupt” in this space because I haven’t seen someone define what disruption is, but maybe I haven’t looked hard enough. Despite these things, I want to see an insurtech succeed. I want to see their technology result in low expense ratios (where I think tech can be leveraged most) and industry leading combined ratios. When I worked at an insurtech, I loved the chaos of standing a business up, the work environment, and the thought of doing something great together to “disrupt” the insurance industry. I still want that company to do those things, but after a decade plus, has an insurtech managed to be profitable? I’m not aware of one in the auto space. There can be no disruption without sustainability. Sustainability is the difference between a statistical anomaly and true “disruption”. True disruption results in others following the disruptor in whatever it is that they are doing that results in disruption.
