I'm sitting at O'Hare right now, waiting for my flight to get called for home. It was a very successful week at Community Exchange 2024, and I am very very grateful for all the Internet2 event staff's hard work and dedication at running this event. My talk went extremely well (it's a huge compliment from the attendees when I get good feedback from people who weren't even at the talk!), and I think as a community we need to think about the impact that recent developments in pluggable optics are going to have on truly converging packet and optical cores in ways that haven't really reached the regional and long-haul networks yet. One thing that keeps coming up over and over, that it is very obvious I need to be evangelizing and working with the vendors as much as I can on is interoperability. One common phrase that I use all the time is "Networking is a team sport". This doesn't mean just engineers, operators, policymakers, this means everyone and the hardware vendors need to be fully on board with this. Especially when customers need as much flexibility as possible when selecting hardware to meet their needs, vendor lock-in for pluggables needs to be something that *used* to be done. This means it's time for the industry to fully embrace all their standards with all their knobs, switches, options, and modes. The TL;DR at the end of the day is that if you're taking a new networking product to market that doesn't present all of the CMIS interface to your end-users, you're doing it wrong. I am going to be providing more thoughts on this in the future, but that's where I'm starting. Open standards that are fully accessible are good. Don't settle for anything less.

One of the privileges of my work is that I get to go to a variety of tech conferences, gatherings, and meet-ups and absorb all kinds of information and experiences.
