I heard a great quote yesterday 🔥🔥🔥 “Science is lead by doubt. Entrepreneurship by conviction.” I can’t tell you the amount of times I’ve worked with companies who were convinced their idea was the best and never stopped to doubt it. A mixture of both is always best. The BioTech world is full of exciting startups and companies looking quite literally to change the world for the better. Over the last month I’ve had the pleasure to meet or hear from many who are combining solid scientific research with commercial prowess. So here’s my February roundup of some of my favourites: 🩸 Woost: diagnosing gynaecological conditions early 💠 Naturbeads: replacing those nasty microplastics with degradable cellulose 🧀 Better Dairy: lower environmental impact, cow-free, real cheese! 🌿 Resurrect Bio (of course!): working on global food security 💚 Algreen Ltd.: biodegradable plastics made from algae 🐘 Nellie Technologies: large scale carbon capture using photobioreactors 🚀 Vertical Future: because someone mentioned vertical farming on the ISS Come back next month for my March roundup. I’ve already earmarked a few names… #foodtech #agtech #agritech #biotech #future #research #entrepreneurship #changeforthebetter

Two Innovation Economies Punching Above Their Weight: Finland and New Zealand - a fascinating article by Mark Bregman. Reflections on similarities - specifically from a start up lens - between the two countries and interesting suggestions for collaboration opportunities ! Mark's article triggered to to reflect on why Scion has decade long partnerships with Finish counterparts like VTT and the Natural Resources Institute Finland / Luonnonvarakeskus. A big focus for us is - besides forestry - the tech-driven circular bioeconomy - think synthetic biology, biomanufacturing, cleantech, precision fermentation for innovative products, advanced manufacturing or biorefineries. It is about developing solutions poised to tackle not just one but many of humanity’s greatest challenges through the convergence of underpinning technologies. Additionally the opportunities for partnerships are increasing - One year ago New Zealand joined Horizon Europe. Partnerships - locally and globally are so important when addressing the challenges but also opportunities of the coming decades. The international networks formed will be very beneficial for our partners in New Zealand. Businesses built on diversity, connectivity and sustainability have the competitive edge in today’s global markets. Finland is one of the leading countries in bioeconomy, biomanufacturing and industrial biotechnology related technologies - this is why we see so much value and opportunity : ✔ For New Zealand the global imperative to transition away from fossil fuels and petrochemicals to sustainable biobased alternatives is a huge opportunity. ✔ Scion and our partners are contributing world-leading science and technology expertise, linked to an emerging biotechnology and biomanufacturing sector to New Zealand's natural competitive advantage around growing sustainable biomass. ✔ Altogether, this means New Zealand has a globally unique value proposition - to accelerate economic growth, productivity, high value jobs and new high value export products. What do opportunities in the tech-driven bioeconomy between Finland and New Zealand look like? #bioeconomy #circulareconomy #circularbioeconomy #science #technology #innovation #greengrowth #biotech #biotechnology #syntheticbiology #AI #cleantech #cleantechnology #biomaterials #biorefinery #manufacturing #forestry #innovation #climatechange #designthinking #systemsthinking #circularity #newzealand #finland #startup https://lnkd.in/du2VJ-yC

Leaving the fossile-driven economy behind is quite a journey. Our contribution: #BIOECONOMY #DEEPDIVEs We learned to apply solutions bilaterally and catalyze scaling ✅ But transition towards biogenic feedstock means huge dynamic pressure for specific value chains which cannot be sorted by individual stakeholder alone. In a collaborative format we focus on suitable value chains to identify upcoming challenges, specifically address them and close innovation gaps by selecting the best startups. THE WHY: We all know that closing the food gap is the core challenge for agrifood systems - but its a mega trend difficult to address proactively and individually. So whats behind this initiative and whats our contribution? To foster an economy based on biogenic feedstock (and circular processes) we act #bilaterally, on #ecosystem level and now #ValueChains. - In a bilateral setting we established #VentureClienting activities to catalyze economically viable cooperation between innovative Startups and scaled industry (Aquapurna is an example). - Fostering #Ecosystems consortia are key like in projects like Smarterra. The missing link has always been the connection between a topline setting and enabling change by specifically applying change. We are more than happy to get support by the fantastic team of Rentenbank with funding by BMEL (Bundesministerium für Ernährung und Landwirtschaft). Lukas Hoyos Alexander Engelke Caspar von Alvensleben Dr. Christian Bock Nikola Steinbock Stay tuned! And many thanks for all the support to develop this format https://lnkd.in/e94uicHr RootCamp - A SpinLab Company
