Spent a great hour of connection and learning with TeachAI during the #EILS session. Thank you Pam Vimonmas Vachatimanont & Pat Yongpradit for inviting me to join! Key takeaway: To increase trust and confidence in the use of AI, we need to rebuild trust and confidence more broadly in the teaching profession. There was a sentiment shared that trust is hard to come by in general; we can't expect teachers to trust a new tech tools when they don't feel trusted and highly regarded as professionals. We also discussed the need to ensure community education and commitment for AI literacy and media literacy and wellbeing. We can't simply tackle AI safety by "getting out in front of AI" in a way that we didn't for the internet or social media without attempting to course correct and restore balance in the use of earlier technologies. This takes community so that all stakeholders are empowered with knowledge and share commitments to do better with tech, including AI, now that we know better. #TeachAI

Exciting news to share! I’ve joined the 2024 EDSAFE AI Alliance Ally program — a global program that offers access to a range of resources, virtual workshops, and networking opportunities that will allow me to engage with others in the community and further develop my understand, interests and skills in AI and education. 🚀 Where my beliefs about AI in education begin: Teaching and learning is a deeply human endeavor. AI cannot and should not replace teachers and the need for human-centered connection and interaction in the classroom. AI **may** serve as a complementary tool, augmenting the educator's ability to implement evidence-based strategies grounded in the understanding of how students learn. However, teachers need to learn when it is and isn’t appropriate to use AI, which types of tools to use, how the AI tools themselves are built and what misconceptions, or worse stereotypes, the tech has of students, and how to model this usage for their students. 🏁 I’m not sure how my thinking will change over the course of this program but I invite other allies (and the broader community) to challenge me as we embark on this learning adventure.

AI is revolutionizing education—and I'm 100% committed to ensuring that students are prepared to harness its potential effectively and responsibly. As we integrate AI into classrooms, we have a critical role in shaping how students understand and use this powerful tool. But as we push to expand AI literacy and prepare students for an AI-driven world, I believe it's equally important to balance this progress with our duty to protect their safety and data privacy. I realize this may not be the most popular conversation right now—especially with so much focus on the excitement around AI’s possibilities—but I think it’s vital to ask: Is there a gap in understanding the importance of data privacy among some of those driving AI integration? In our rush to learn and implement AI as fast as possible, are we unintentionally putting student safety at risk by using tools that may not meet the highest privacy standards? GPT-4o is out and this demo is my personal favorite. It shows how AI can completely redefine education. We are far from materializing the true value of education. GPT-4o is one small but important step towards fully personalized education for everyone.
