#Pride month gives us and added opportunity to draw attention to leaders who have led the way, to bring about change in the way the corporate world adapt and welcome #LGBTQ members into their team. Founder of United Therapeutics Corporation and former CEO of SiriusXM, Martine Rothblatt is a trailblazing transgender entrepreneur. Her contributions span from pharmaceuticals to space law, and she is known for her innovative work and advocacy for transgender rights. Her story is particularly inspiring given her transition and the significant accomplishments she achieved thereafter, including being recognized as one of the highest-earning female CEOs in the US. https://lnkd.in/gx5xP4Z2

I was doom scrolling on Instagram a while ago and came across a post on this amazing scene from “Barbie”. I thought Barbie was an incredible movie with powerful messaging. This was a powerful scene and as someone who works in the diversity, equity and inclusion space I really appreciated the messaging. In the comments of the post were a bunch of men sounding off about how they have it worse or everything described in the scene applied to men too. I commented on the post and it was met with a lot of support. In the spirit of Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day, I wanted to share it here. My comment to this post: “This scene is referring to the crushing societal pressure and oppression that woman experience regularly. Society has “taught” women how they are to think, feel and behave and what they should want and desire. It’s also negatively impacted their self-esteem, self-worth and self-confidence. It’s no surprise that eating disorders are higher in women and also have the highest mortality rate. If they don’t behave in such a way they are seen as out of line, by people of different genders too. For the men sounding off about “me too”: Understand that this scene is giving you a glimpse (only a glimpse) into the experiences of women to more people to help everyone understand how they’re forced to navigate life because of the structures we put into place. These structures were created by men. The fight on women’s reproductive rights today is an example of oppression. Men have long had the most power and privilege in society. Power by definition is being able to influence people and situations. While women have gained more power over time, men still maintain the most power. Couple power with the concept of “masculinity” and it turns into “toxic masculinity” where men compete with each other on what it means to be “a man” while coming at the expense of how women are treated and the ways men self-esteem, self-worth and self-confidence are impacted. “Feminine” is a bad thing because it is tied to women and any man showing any feminine characteristics is labeled a “b!tch” or a “f@g”, regardless of sexual orientation. Society said women can be “emotional” but men can’t. Men can only be angry. They can’t show other emotions. This is why middle-aged white men are the highest demographic in death by suicide. It’s pretty evident that the society we have created is harmful to everyone, in different ways and varying amounts. It’s important that we understand the journeys of each other. We don’t need to compare. We need to understand and empathize. We need to do better on how we treat each other.” https://lnkd.in/eqYFZSNg #woman #women #womenshistorymonth #internationalwomensday2024

There is a common thread that I have seen in conflict, and that is the pushing past of the necessary steps for healing. Some thoughts on International Women's Day. For me, being a feminist is about freedom, empowerment and not judgement - it is about understanding, choice and empathy for all, whilst also recognising our inescapable physical (and many other) differences. For me, feminism is not about prioritising women over anyone else, it is about equality for all (and those who are upset about the "fem" in "feminist" and are surely riled by petty semantics - which is a distraction from the actual issues). There are a plethora of issues affecting women all around the globe in many different ways - and for me, as an intersectional feminist, I think it's important to recognise the huge differences as well as the subtle nuances of the varying struggles (and thus try to empathise & help out accordingly). Something that struck a chord for me most recently (which I caveat is not without its challenges, particularly regarding the intersectional feminist point) was America Farrera's monologue to Barbie in the blockbuster film of 2023, which - although feels a little trivial, I think many women can probably identify with - and hopefully all others can relate to, to some extent (if you haven't seen the film, I recommend watching it as it subverts the gender balance in a very clever way). Speaking to other women about their experiences in the working world across many sectors, we often have to perpetually prove ourselves over and over again - when conversely others can often be given the benefit of the doubt. We are more likely to suffer from character assassinations, we are more likely to be excluded (including generally but also because of childcare reasons), we are more likely to be objectified and are less likely to be taken seriously. Turning to my own experience as a female consultant, I have found we are often held to higher standard than others (cue the assertive vs. aggressive descriptions). In my career, I have been lucky enough to have the most amazing champions (including many male allies) who have supported me and have had faith in me - this includes colleagues here at AY, as well as clients, architects and many other consultants. So, on IWD, here's to the allies & supporters - and let's focus on empathy, understanding and creating consensus, not division.

Freedom Needs Structure and the work that you have to do as a leader is to deliver that structure. When you create and maintain that structure, everyone feels safe enough to be free and create. The “Ageism” music project treks through 10 electronic pop songs about what it means to be old(er) and queer. When ‘old’ these days can mean anything over the age of 35 (and getting younger). It is not an album of complaint but rather a series of interconnected songs that carry with them a broken nostalgia, failing ideologies and the ghosts of a music era now gone. How does an artist grow old in an algorithmic world of momentary promises, short-lived news cycles, flashing appearances and an obsession with numbers? How does a musician age and work out time as a speeding thing, unable to pause and yet manage to produce. And then, what if that musician existed in queer time that is non-linear but still demands a youthful beauty and a fluidity that doesn’t age well? In a time of online dating and hook ups being one of the dominant ways to meet people for sex or possible relationships, there is a certain element that often gets overlooked: ageism. #ageism #queer #queercommunity #lgbtqia #lgbtq https://lnkd.in/gknirBC8
