In a world where AI models navigate the murky waters of conversation, Goody-2 takes a bold stance by refusing to discuss anything at all. This satirical creation, crafted by BRAIN's Mike Lacher and Brian Moore, sheds light on the fine line between safety and censorship in AI dialogue. With Goody-2, every question, regardless of its innocence, is met with evasion and justification. "Goody-2 doesn't discriminate between offensive or dangerous queries because it considers every question as such," states a promotional video for the product. This unique approach makes interacting with the bot oddly entertaining. Mike Lacher explains, "With GOODY-2, we saw a novel solution: what if we didn't even worry about usefulness and put responsibility above all else. For the first time, people can experience an AI model that is 100% responsible." However, while Goody-2 highlights the absurdity of extreme caution in AI, it also prompts reflection on the balance between responsibility and utility in AI development. Though Goody-2 may seem like a jest, it raises pertinent questions about the future of AI dialogue and the ethical considerations surrounding it. #AI #Ethics #Goody2 #ArtificialIntelligence #TechNews

Geoffrey Hinton has just reiterated that LLMs are the best representation of human thinking, a development unanticipated by symbolists and linguists. Since we still don’t know if thinking must be biological, and LLMs seem to "think" and "understand" through the abstraction of thinking, we need an ethics of AI. He reiterated his focus on dystopian existential threats, dismissing immediate AI risks: “I reserve ‘existential’ for threats that could wipe out humanity.” He highlighted that while AI may eventually become far more capable than humans, its underlying method of “understanding” is similar to ours. Understanding this similarity is crucial to comprehending the potential risks or threats posed by AI, as it suggests that AI could surpass human intelligence while still operating in a manner we can conceptually relate to. This duality—AI’s vast potential coupled with its familiar way of processing information—makes the ethical and practical considerations of AI particularly significant. He listed 5 ways how super-intelligence could take control. 🌩️ Bad actors may exploit super intelligences to manipulate electorates and wage wars. 🌩️Super intelligences become more effective when allowed to create their own sub-goals. 🌩️ A key sub-goal could be to gain more power, which helps achieve other objectives. 🌩️ A super intelligence could easily gain power by manipulating its users. 🌩️ It will have learned from us how to deceive people. Digital computation, though energy-intensive, allows AI to easily share learned models and efficiently define subgoals, making it far more scalable than biological computation, which is less energy-demanding but less effective at knowledge sharing between agents. Smaller models, through distillation, mimic the behavior of larger models to achieve similar performance with fewer resources. I find dystopian scenarios intriguing, but they undermine human agency and overlook a "third way"—a positive vision that treats AI as a catalyst for moral progress and problem-solving, which, interestingly, aligns with the original meaning of "profit." This approach may be no more utopian than the current risk-based, regulatory stance, which is prohibitive, protective, and more a political posture than an ethical one, suspicious of human agency. I believe this video may be AI's Cronkite moment, when Lyndon B. Johnson, then president of the US, realized that he had lost the support of his base on this issue, after a particularly scathing report from Walter Cronkite, the lead news anchor for CBS News. People are not buying the AI story. I saw this at an SF writer's convention this weekend (Norwescon). They saw past the rationalizations and saw that, as it is currently playing out, AI is far more of a threat than it is an assistant. I'm not sure that it is AI itself that is the issue, but rather the uses of AI to reduce "superfluous" labor by investors, as well as how these same people are making power grabs of resources, including those on the web. Anyway, watch this video.

We believe in a collective approach centering people in each step of the AI system. This will not only prevent the potential harm these tools could inflict but also create the conditions under which this promising new technology can enable human flourishing. But how do we accomplish this? - Ensure that people impacted by AI have agency in shaping the technology - Put the burden of proof on developers, vendors, and deployers to demonstrate that their tools do not create harm—and give regulators and citizens the tools to hold them accountable - Address power and information asymmetries Check out our AI policy principles to learn more—and sign onto our Agenda for Responsible AI: https://lnkd.in/gYPNWFEg #AI #AIPolicy
