A few weeks ago, I had the amazing experience of attending the #PerspektywyWomeninTechSummit2024 in Warsaw. The entire conference was incredible, from the dedicated organizers to the companies, academic institutions, and the inspiring public. As a founder, I understand the challenges women face in various industries, and witnessing this community's efforts to promote inclusivity fills me with hope and empowerment. I'm grateful to be part of this vibrant community. At the conference, I discovered some interesting opportunities for those looking to start in the tech industry or those who are hesitant to take the first step in their job search: - 42 Warsaw (https://42warsaw.pl/): An academy that teaches programming through peer-to-peer learning and project work, offering a unique approach that blends teaching and hands-on learning. - Talenti (https://talenti.pl/en/): A platform that supports women in the recruitment process and connects candidates with employers. - Moje Stypendium (https://lnkd.in/d3xuX7yp): A site where you can apply for various scholarships. - Code Your Path (codeyourpath.eu): This foundation helps foreign people in Poland with various needs, including finding jobs in the tech industry. The complaining game. This might hurt a little. It's in this 21st generation that we enjoy complaining about everything. A few weeks ago, I was scrolling through my Fyp on TikTok and I came across a video where a lady was asking women in tech to provide tech-deep tutorials on how they enrolled in tech. And her request was she doesn't want to buy an e-book, nor the harder way to enroll in tech. But want the so-called "lazy girl tech opportunities. " .......... I was shocked. I mean why do we expect everything to be easy and free? How do you expect someone who sacrificed time, patience, and resilience to get a good-paying tech job to provide you with everything for free? This is more than wanting food on the table but some individuals want to be spoon-fed and finally told to chew. And who told some of these women that tech is a lazy girl's career? And how many such ladies skip tech videos on TikTok and YouTube and choose other videos? It funny, how some women enjoy complaining and won't even be patient to enroll in fully sponsored opportunities. Nothing valuable is free, even paid scholarships require commitment. Let's respect tech careers, especially for women in tech. In 2024, women are still a great minority in the technology sector. Here’s the stats on diversity in the tech industry: 77% of tech director roles are filled by men. 26% of the tech workforce are women, with only 8% being POC. 76% of women in a tech role have experienced gender discrimination or bias. While it’s clear that it’s crucial for companies to adopt inclusive hiring practices, these statistics beg the question: how can we attract women to pursue careers in tech? Look what I saw in my draft! 🤦♀️ There is something about this acceptance letter, a proof of my perseverance. I got accepted into the Women Techsters cohort 3.0 Tech4Dev (the very first time I applied) and missed it simply because I wasn’t checking my mail constantly.✨ I was crestfallen and decided to keep re-applying, followed them on all socials and whenever they call for application, I didn’t hesitate. Attended plenty women techsters open day. I won’t lie, when I saw this cohort 3.3 I was at the verge of giving up. I had applied for 3.1 and 3.2 and it seemed they wouldn’t take me any longer. On a second thought, I decided to try one more time. The essence of this post is for you to try one more time and to join my boss Raphael Obike in emphasizing the importance of checking your emails regularly. I nearly missed an incredible opportunity because I overlooked an important message in my inbox. It serves as a reminder to stay vigilant and attentive to communication channels, as you never know when an important opportunity might come knocking. 📧 NB: Every morning, I check my email whether I’m expecting something or not. Is 'career stability' a thing of the past? I came across this article on LinkedIn News UK recently and was intrigued. It's said that Gen-z workers are expected to change careers three times more than in any other generation for various reasons, including better pay, stability, or improved work life balance. Whatever your reason, whilst pivoting can be rewarding, it can also be very daunting. Here's how to make it work if you're considering pivoting into the world of tech, especially as a woman: ① Seek mentorship - connect with other experienced individuals in tech who can provide guidance and support. ② Find specific tech groups you can join, both on and offline. For women, there are lots of 'women in tech' groups you can join which can provide networking opportunities and a supportive environment. A few examples: Women Who Code, Code First Girls, Coding Black Females, SheCanCode and much more... ③ Evaluate your current skill-set and identify the skills and characteristics you have that are transferable into a career in tech - NOT all tech jobs require you to be able to code. ④ Identify areas which you may need to upskill - for example, look for in-demand programming languages, data analysis, cloud computing, agile methodology etc... ⑤ Confidence building - lots of us, women especially, face imposter syndrome, especially when transitioning into the world of tech, so it's key to look at ways you can build your confidence skills. Attend workshops, read books, listen to podcasts and speak to others.
