Nearly 50 years ago, Bill Gates and Paul Allen founded Microsoft—a company that has had a lasting impression and impact on the software industry, and Big Tech itself. https://lnkd.in/eBVeyXqg To build such a successful company, Gates rarely took breaks. In fact, he said that in the early days of Microsoft, he really didn’t even believe in them, Gates told Northern Arizona University’s graduating class in 2023. “When I was your age, I didn’t believe in vacations. I didn’t even believe in weekends,” said Gates, who was about 20 years old when he started Microsoft in 1975. “I pushed everyone around me to work very long hours.” Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eBVeyXqg

I started my professional career as a technical recruiter in Microsoft’s college recruiting organization back in the 1990s. I learned so much from that job about technology, professionalism, teamwork, recruiting, interviewing, closing, compensation… the list is long. However, what I learned the most was the value of taking the time to invest in relationships. What so many companies get wrong is how amazing and impactful a great recruiter/candidate relationship is in the short - medium - long term. I met Jeff Strasser on campus and did his first round interview. Months later, was his on site recruiter shepherding him through rounds of interviews and the hiring process and making him his offer…and convincing him to join the company. As he notes below, he remembers where he was when he got that phone call. Although he chose to join Microsoft and has just hit 25 years, we’ve stayed in touch and had many career conversations over the years. I know many others who I had to say they didn’t get an offer, discussed maybe they shouldn’t take my offer because it really wasn’t a fit for their life goals (or those who turned me down!!) and we have reconnected over the years or down the line. The world is small. Invest in relationships and invest in great recruiters. Even if you’re not hiring, don’t just knee jerk and layoff those relationship wizards - perhaps they can help you retain your current internal folks or set up your future pipelines when you’re ready to go. And congrats Jeff but more importantly, congrats Microsoft.
This is the first 'Thank You' post I've written on LinkedIn. And as Microsoft is enters its 50th year, hitting my own 25-year milestone at the company today certainly feels like a moment to reflect but more importantly to let the people who got you here know the impact they had. When I started in July 1999, we were supporting Exchange Server 5.5, getting ready for Y2K, and I felt woefully inadequate as a 22-year-old telling large enterprise customers how to get their e-mail working again. Now, in 2024, having gone thru the mobile era, cloud era, and now into the Gen-AI era and running an amazing team and nearly $2B business, there are so many people (probably most that read this) that played a role one way or another in getting here. I've learned from you all, taking bits and pieces of what you all do so well to be the best I can; and I still learn every day how to do better, be better and keep growing. So, with that, just a few of the names that I've worked for, with, had important career conversations with, or just learned a from and have been important to me, thank you, I hope this is a reminder of the impact you've had on me, but more importantly in the careers of many others as well. Colleen McCreary Andrew McCreary Mark Sestak Eddie Fong Hope Lawrence Terry Myerson Derek DiPerna Eddie O'Brien Pallavi Sebastian Margaret Arakawa Susan Walsh Brad Mark Natalie Carullo Mary Carol Alexander Jeff Wilson Peter Mabee Carlton Dossman Jose Luis Ortiz Laura Butler Todd Greenberg Gavin Orleow Kim Akers Alex Payne Dave McKinney Kyle J. Jessen There are many others of course, including everyone on my own teams that I still learn from every single day. Thanks to all of you; so grateful. #Microsoft #25Years
