Last Friday was my final day at Microsoft. My time at Microsoft was very interesting and I really enjoyed working at the company and with my org. I joined Microsoft right before the pandemic started and soon entered lockdowns where I had to work from home while also building a brand new org focused on operating M365 in government spaces. There are a lot of really strong pros to working at Microsoft. 1. Microsoft really values you as a person. I never felt like just a number at Microsoft and felt like the company had my best interests at heart. 2. Strong work/life balance. Most people check out for the day around 4 and even if you want to do more work, it can become very challenging, as so many projects are very interdependent on other people (which can be frustrating, but ultimately leads to good work/life balance.) 3. Great pay/benefits. There are several other pros (and cons) to working at Microsoft, but I do think the pros overwhelm the cons. I would recommend most people consider working at Microsoft at some point in their career. At some point I may sit down and build a pros/cons list of Microsoft vs Amazon, as that was by far the number one question people would ask me during interviews if they knew I worked at Amazon prior to Microsoft. I think both companies are fantastic, though and would 100% work for either again in the future. However, with the closing of my Microsoft chapter, I begin my Anduril chapter, where I'm excited to rejoin a lot of my former Palantir friends. The Anduril mission is one I believe in deeply. I'll be heading the SRE and Deployed Systems groups at Anduril and will be hiring people immediately. If you are interested in coming to work with me, I'll predominantly be hiring SRE-types. You will need an active Top Secret clearance to come join us, but would love to hear from those of you who are interested!

When I left Microsoft, I had a bold vision: I wanted to build an impactful, big business with a small team. The conventional wisdom? Hire experienced professionals, and follow industry-standard practices. This approach didn’t resonate with me. Instead, I hired recent college graduates. No industry experience. No preconceived notions about how things "should" be done. I wanted to take a bunch of super-talented folks and train them and share with them the best practices I'd learned at Microsoft. I also wanted to share what they should avoid—things that can affect team culture or slow own our velocity. And it's worked out for us. We have a full-time staff of just 5 people. Every single one of those people is at the peak of their performance. I don't need to be available to them 24/7. We chat once a day to check if they need anything urgent and identify the most impactful tasks for the day. And because everyone is crystal clear on the vision, they're all highly motivated to achieve it. It's been an incredible journey so far—and we're just getting started.
