(Post inspired by a recent conversation with someone young, newish to the Salesforce ecosystem and debating how to go about configuring something) The topic of discussion? Contacts vs Person Accounts. Her biggest concern was that Person Accounts was irreversible once turned on and will twice the storage on the platform at 2KB for an Account and 2KB for a Contact. “Have you tested this on a sandbox?”, I asked. “What is the point of that? I have created Contacts and Accounts many times before.” came the response. “Humour me 😉”, I said. She made the Account field not required, created a Contact on a sandbox and saved it. She then logged in as a Sales User who will need this Contact but couldn’t find the contact she had created. Ofcourse, Mel was a certified Admin, but while theoretically debating and documenting the pros and cons of Contacts and Person Accounts, she forgot that Contacts without parents are orphan contacts and you need an Account and a Contact which is 4KB anyway, therefore storage becomes irrelevant to the discussion. She forgot to be curious… to try something and fail at it even… because once you fail, you remember it for the next time! BE CURIOUS! You can’t do much wrong in a sandbox and if you do, refresh it, or spin up a new developer org. Don’t know how Person Accounts work? Enable it in a trial org. Not sure how an Appexchange app is supposed to work? Install it in a sandbox (you can always uninstall it) and have a go at the installation guide.
