Hey everyone. Here’s the top ten links/stories I came across week. 1. From Canada: a very preliminary story based on a leaked document (which I can verify is true) outlining coming changes to the student visa system. They are big. Very big. Expect more on this soon. (https://rb.gy/kmx48f) 2. From California, a story on how the University of California is gradually reducing its reliance on out-of-state and international enrolment. Apparently it is possible. (https://rb.gy/kt7iic) 3. There is a lot of unwarranted hype around micro-credentials. Texas is one place where the government is putting a lot of effort into making them work. (https://rb.gy/510kpf) 4. Arizona State University signed a collaboration deal with OpenAI. This seems like one of those times where Michael Crow is making stuff up as he goes along, and this story may turn out to be a nothingburger. But never underestimate ASU. (https://rb.gy/jqkya2 ) 5. An outlook for Australian higher education to 2050, commissioned by Universities Australia. More of this kind of foresight work, please! (https://rb.gy/3otb6c) 6. A free book on the future of doctoral education! From excellent colleagues Maria Yudkevich, Philip Altbach and Hans (J.W.M.) de Wit (https://lnkd.in/gTNt7Cyj) 7. Noah Smith on this year’s reasons for techno-optimism. (https://lnkd.in/ggVGBs8g) 8. From the unbelievably productive policy shop that is the Higher Education Policy Institute, an interesting report on universities and regional research capacity. (https://lnkd.in/grfynSUx) 9. Tony Bates has started writing an autobiographical history of Open Learning education. Installment #1 is at the link. Looking forward to more of these. (https://lnkd.in/gJp63-DE) 10. My friend Isak Frumin and his unit at Constructor University have started an interesting webinar series on innovative universities. Catch up with them here (https://lnkd.in/gtSPNHEg) Have a great week!

#ThursDO #CallforApplications 📌 Niklas Göke's September 20 newsletter was one of introspection. The kind that had my mind up and jogging in an instant. He explains that life may not be all mysterious as we have come to accept, as there are some things we can tell can lead us to lifelong regret in terms of individual actions and inactions. The question “Which regrets would hurt forever?” is a great starting point, as it ensures we think about each action/inaction we take/don't take through a long-term lens. As Nik puts it: "Swallowing the bitter pill may spoil our appetite for now, but it’ll set our stomach straight in time for dessert." On today's edition of #ThursDO, I welcome you to reflect on your decisions today as an investment in future victories. #ThursDO is where I share #global 🌎opportunities beckoning you to showcase your brilliance to the world. 1. University of Toronto, Canada, Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program Info here: https://lnkd.in/dgrfZ2iB 2. World Future Energy Summit; Climate Innovations Exchange Application link: https://lnkd.in/dSKYCnQg Info here: https://lnkd.in/drjVGSmk 3. Fellowships at Auschwitz for the Study of Professional Ethics Info here: https://lnkd.in/dmYuCJJX 4. Mo Ibrahim Foundation Fellowship Info here: https://lnkd.in/dcWdeft4 Next Steps: 📍 Read, and reflect on the eligibility criteria, and if they reflect your work 📍 Read through all the question prompts 📍 Open up a Google Doc, and input all the questions (I am specific about Google Docs because this allows you access to add response ideas regardless of where you are, and what device is around you; e.g. with your phone during your work commute.) 📍 Answer at least one prompt daily 📍 Use LinkedIn to search for and study the profiles of persons who have won the opportunity before you (reach out if the deadline permits) 📍 Crosscheck the application deadline daily. Never forget this! 📍 Give enough time to read your responses out loud into a recorder, WhatsApp VN, to people who care about you (Trust me, many grammar fails that reading in your mind may not catch, reading out loud grabs by the neck) 📍 Pray. A LOT. 📍 SUBMIT I wish you the best on your journey of personal and professional growth. ................................ 🙋♀️ Hello, I am Blessing Oluchukwu Awamba. I love to talk about navigating life as a young person, holistic #education for now, and the sustainable #future I am contributing to building, and amplifying the work of young changemakers doing the same in their circles. If you would love to read more, let's connect.

Trade schools and Universities are distinctly different from one another and attending one in the hopes of getting the other’s offering makes little sense to me. Trade schools petered out and died… or did they? As trade schools became passe, computers became ubiquitous and open source licenses led to a flood of open source tools, computer languages, and freely available documentation. And what was the student financially ill equipped to attend a University to do? Learn by alternative methods… and many did. How else do you compete in a global marketplace where your international peers are doing just that? I see Universities maintaining their venerable societal role of teaching and guiding not what, but how to think and originate new knowledge. In my humble opinion, anyone who attends the University in the hopes of learning a trade may well be in the wrong place as other cheaper alternatives exist. However, if you want to learn to fundamentally think and receive guidance in how to stretch yourself well past your limits, I can think of no other place! https://lnkd.in/e8AiJ2yn All being said, did I initially enter a University seeking a trade and eventually find myself creating a PhD dissertation? Yes. At least in my case, thank goodness that we often land in a place distinct from our initial choosing.
