📑Taking a look at our #GlobalTalentVisa Success Stories! Today we’re spotlighting Kai Ding, a #EdTech and #AI expert who joined our visa programme in 2023. 📍 Current role: Product Strategy at Preply 🧠 Previous experience: National Strategy and Planning Manager at Uber 🌐 Specialist sector: Educational Technology and Artificial Intelligence 💭 Why did you choose the UK for the next stage of your career? “It may sound crazy but I have never visited the UK before I moved here! What helped me make the decision is a graduate school alum from UCB who was a Global Talent Ambassador. I learned that UK tech was growing very strong, with an amazing diverse culture and an openness for talent you won’t see much elsewhere (GTV is a testimony). So I took the leap of faith and couldn’t be happier with the decision.” 🇬🇧 What’s been a standout UK career highlight for you? "Professionally, I joined Preply which is an Edtech startup that recently raised a $100m Series C. For the few months since I started, we’ve added probably over 100-200 employees. More exciting to me is the potential for new technologies such as AI to empower language learning. It is close to my heart, because I always consider myself a global citizen and I’m raising a 2-year old to be bilingual (at least). Personally, I am so positively amazed by the diversity in London, and there’s no cultural barrier whatsoever. It’s also an amazing city to raise a family, with all the parks and amazing museums to explore." Yesterday's post from Tech Nation about me and my Global Talent Visa made me reflect on my journey and why I am doing what I am doing. I remember very well my pre-visa life when relocation to the UK seemed completely unattainable. A girl from a middle-class family in a small industrial town in Eastern Ukraine - how dare I even think about moving to London? A combination of life events and (very) hard work led me to the point of 'do or do not, there is no try,' and I did - I applied and received my Tech Nation Visa. It's much more than a stamp in my passport, it turned out to be a life-changing decision I never regretted. One of the reasons I came to London was to build and grow Blue Lake VC, where we are investing in exceptional immigrant founders. When I talk about immigrant founders, I often describe them as those without a plan B. I didn't have one, and I still don't. Both of my homes in Ukraine have been under occupation since 2014 and 2022. I literally have nowhere to return to, and if I did, I would need to start everything from scratch again. This is why I resonate with founders in similar situations. We have no choice but to keep building and creating. This is why I am passionately believe in our thesis to back immigrant founders for whom failure is simply not an option. I have an opportunity to build and create here thanks to Tech Nation, and the immense support I received from team and the visa community. Natasha Takhar Susan Fowler Lisa Gray Josh Winfield-Harris Oli Monks I am forever grateful for your warm welcome when I arrived and was taking my first steps here. For those doubting themselves while considering relocation especially if you know this will help you to achieve your goals - go for it. It's super scary, but totally worth it. Special thanks to my co-founder David Gilgur who have been supporting me in this journey.
✨ Taking a look at our #GlobalTalentVisa Success Stories! ✨ Today we’re spotlighting Lyubov Guk, a #VentureCapital expert who joined our visa programme in 2021. 📍 Current role: Founding Partner, Blue Lake VC 🧠 Previous experience: Partner at VimesVC 📈 Specialist sector: VC 💭 Why did you choose the UK for the next stage of your career? "My first visit to London almost a decade ago left me enamoured with the city—a sentiment that has only grown stronger over time. Previously, in my non-tech career, I had been actively building bridges between the UK and my home country, Ukraine, fostering robust ties with the UK's ecosystem. When I transitioned into the tech sector about five years ago, the UK was the obvious choice to fully realise my potential, thanks to its dynamic and supportive tech environment. In 2020, I made the life-changing decision to relocate to the UK, leveraging my experience as a founder, investor, and startup mentor to secure my visa." 🇬🇧 What’s been a standout UK career highlight for you so far? "Integrating into the London tech community and contributing to its dynamic growth has been extremely fulfilling!"
