When was the last time you did any work shadowing? For most of us, it was probably quite a while ago… What about having someone shadow you…? Work shadowing has so many benefits – not just for the individual shadowing, but for the person being shadowed too. Harriet Clark joined us at Tandem last week for a few days. Hattie’s just about to go into her second year of a Business & Management degree at the University of Exeter, and her main objective over the summer was to explore various roles and industries before she decides what kind of thing to apply for in her placement year. We got loads out of having her with us. It was a great opportunity for us to reflect on and clarify what we do and why we do it. Hattie didn’t just ask great questions, but volunteered her suggestions and ideas too! Work shadowing builds confidence and explores strengths for everyone involved. And, it’s not just for new people, for work experience or for junior hires. Anyone can benefit from work shadowing – on both sides - whatever role or job you do. Shadow work is the path of the heart warrior. One of the most effective tools to pass knowledge is job shadowing. As someone who is interested in people, I feel honored when it reignites a passion in the person I am learning from, empowering them to share their skills and practices. The spark in their eyes when they explain why they went into the profession they did, what difficulties they faced, and how they managed to eliminate obstacles adds to my experience. It also makes me think of ways to improve some of the practices. Job shadowing is vital to break through the boundaries within the team, giving the senior a feeling of satisfaction and reward. It also assures that the knowledge is being passed on to the successor. #Jobshadowing
