Include all stakeholders. Allow equal time for all stakeholders regardless of their position in the hierarchy. Set out rules of engagement at the outset. Courtesy and respect are crucial. Set time limits. Structure the time spent as a group with clear goals. Share the outcomes.

We all strive for excellence. But what is excellence and how to do you know when it’s been achieved? For several years, I led a large marketing and communications function inside an even larger organization. We wanted everything we produced to be excellent. So did our internal customers. However, given resource constraints – both money and time – the standard of excellence had to be established on a relative scale. Everything couldn’t be over the top. Early on, we struggled with how to define what excellence was for each project. Ultimately, I developed and shared this definition of excellence with our team: Excellence: "It’s the very best product we can produce within a given timeframe and budget, taking into consideration reach, audience and purpose." It worked! And I hope it works for you too. Without some agreed-upon standards, you’ll drive yourself crazy and never know what level of excellence you are working to achieve! As a chief of staff, this is the kind of enterprise value you can create in your organization. Establishing norms and standards applicable across the board as a way of managing work flow and workload. #chiefofstaff

This most definitely made me smile. It is important for alignment that the company be clear on direction. Culture happens when people come together, so creating a space where people can come together and thrive towards a similar goal, is just a start. Whether top down, bottom up, or managed in the middle. All areas of leadership should be working collectively towards a goal. Each level has an important contribution to make and role. Employees are a huge part of culture transformation so without them on board and included in the conversation, its hard to make real and sustainable change.
Top management sets the tone for the rest of the organization, so their support is essential in driving meaningful and sustained cultural transformation. 😊
