The future of funding for SaaS scale-ups, especially those in the Series A or later stages, likely doesn't lie in Venture Capital for the foreseeable future. Let me break this down for you. Venture Capital funds have experienced a significant drop in liquidity, meaning that liquidity events are postponed due to the stagnation in growth. Look at the number of IPOs in the last 12 months (graph attached) - it's shocking to see that only ±30 companies went public, highlighting the pressing liquidity issue for Venture Capital. This situation is resulting in private equity funds doing Secondaries - buying existing shares from early investors or employees - allowing Venture Capitals to free up cash and avoid being stuck in a company for extended periods, sometimes up to 16 years. This is just an example of how this liquidity issue manifests. This means that the way we, as SaaS companies in Series A, Series B, or even SEED stages, approach our day-to-day business will need to pivot. Private equity looks at different things than Venture Capital. One of the biggest differences is that a Venture Capital firm is happy to invest in companies that burn money and do not yet understand when and how they will reach profitability. In contrast, a private equity firm is unlikely to invest in a company that burns cash or doesn't understand how it will achieve profitability. This fundamentally changes the way we work in SaaS today. Do we understand this? Do we realise that the majority of us, as SaaS owners and leaders, now require a clear path to profitability and a form of sustainable growth in order to continue running our companies? #SaaS #PrivateEquity #SustainableGrowth #Profitability #StartupFunding
