In the big scheme of healthcare operations, predictive models play a role not unlike that of blood tests, X-rays, or MRIs: They influence decisions about whether an intervention is appropriate. “Broadly speaking, models do math and yield probability estimates that help you decide whether to act,” says Nigam Shah, Chief Data Scientist for Stanford Health Care and a Stanford HAI faculty member. Nigam Shah, PhD, Chief Data Scientist at Stanford Health Care and Associate Dean of the Stanford University School of Medicine, believes using AI in healthcare presents four big risks: 1.      Rising inequity from an innovation that benefits only a few people. 2.      Being enamored with flashy technology & never asking, "Is it worth it?" 3.      Increasing the cost of healthcare by making AI pervasive. 4.      Creating single points of failure when technology is concentrated in only a few vendors. "Everybody knows about the cyberattack on Change Healthcare. Now, imagine if everybody's using GPT4 from OpenAI and OpenAI gets hacked. Or we're all using a large cloud-based EHR vendor, which gets hacked. That would be worse than the Change Healthcare situation."
