I see so many young people in unrestrained pursuits of ambitious goals without consideration of the consequences involved. At 83 years old, reflection becomes a habit not an exercise. Many of you will experience this. I will tell you from my decades in the business of ambitious goals and as a participant of life itself, progress can in fact slow down if we're not considerate about social costs or potential harm. We've seen in this in: 1 / Energy (particularly nuclear) 2 / Biotechnology 3 / Social media I believe we may be seeing this in artificial intelligence today. I want to see accelerated progress in all these arenas. But experience has taught me that when you take a long-term view, failing to consider costs can in the long-run slow progress down. This new era of technologists and innovators have an opportunity to set culture differently than was set in my generation. The idea is to have a holistic approach and thoughtfulness without paralysis in execution and experimentation.
