For many coastal communities in Kenya, coral reefs are lifelines, providing protection, livelihoods, and a foundation for economic opportunity. But these critical ecosystems face mounting threats from climate change and overfishing. TechnoServe is empowering young entrepreneurs to build sustainable businesses that restore coral reefs while uplifting their communities. Through eco-tourism and conservation efforts, they’re proving that livelihoods and environmental stewardship go hand in hand. 🌍 Discover how these changemakers are building a brighter future for Kenya’s coast: https://hubs.li/Q034KZLK0 📝 Story by Dennis Otieno

The IUCN's Red List of Ecosystems and partners first global assessment for measuring the health of ecosystems revealed that over 50% of the world's mangroves are at risk of collapse by 2050. The project area of the ACAPA -Bajo Mira y Frontera REDD+ Project in Colombia is home to a vast expanse of mangrove forests including a protected area established in 2017 called Cabo Manglares. Revenue from #carboncredits supports this community-managed REDD+ project to continue protecting this vital ecosystem which: 🐠 Serves as nursery grounds for a diverse array of marine species. 🌍 Plays a pivotal role in carbon sequestration and mitigating climate change, while also offering coastal protection against erosion and storm surges. 💧 Enhances water quality, supports sustainable resource use, and contributes to local livelihoods and cultural practices. THE RIPPLE EFFECT OF WETLAND RESTORATION: BENEFITS FOR ALL Restoring wetlands, such as those in the Sepik region of Papua New Guinea, offers wide-reaching benefits. Ecologically, it enhances biodiversity, providing habitats for diverse flora and fauna. Economically, it supports local communities through sustainable livelihoods and ecotourism opportunities. Wetlands act as natural carbon sinks, mitigating climate change by sequestering carbon dioxide. They also improve water quality by filtering pollutants and replenishing groundwater supplies. Socially, wetland restoration fosters community resilience, cultural preservation, and environmental stewardship. These multifaceted benefits illustrate the profound and interconnected impacts of wetland restoration efforts, creating a healthier planet for all. #WetlandRestoration #Biodiversity #ClimateAction

Can we accomplish the global goal of planting 1 trillion trees by 2030? This is a very ambitious goal set by the United Nations Environment Program, and several initiatives have sprung up, even in Europe with goal of #3BillionTrees. But why is it so vital to plant new trees? Especially in at-risk environments, such as the Po Valley in Italy, where 100% of ecosystems are at risk, creating new forests means protecting protected areas and restoring habitats destroyed due to human activities. We have planted nearly 300,000 trees, also through the WOWnature platform, thanks to the support of citizens, businesses, and institutions. Learn how you can support reforestation ⬇ https://lnkd.in/ekAwyb_T

The true value of a tree…lies not in its extractive value (timber, fruits etc) but in its regenerative value ( ecosystem services, aesthetic, health benefits). Regenerative value could be 100x, even 1000x Thanks David Johnson! #biodiversity #climatechange #trees
