In Büyükada, Adalar/İstanbul, Turkey, a former Greek Orthodox Patriarch Sophronius, has been adapted into a community space for the local residents. Located on the largest island off the coast of Istanbul, the project strived to create a functional space that kept the architectural details and historical significance intact. Preserving the original buildings brick both inside and outside, while also maintaining the same floor plan, the property reduced its material usage in the restoration. A terraced garden in the front of the project, accentuates the amphitheater style outdoor space built for public performances. In the rear of the project, transformative spaces were created within the gardens that will act as a bookstore and cafe space for the neighborhood. The project, shows the capabilities of adaptive reuse, no matter the location, materials, and former uses involved. We must continue to view our historically significant but obsolete structures, as opportunities to preserve and protect the historic significance, while modernizing them for a rapidly changing environment. In Nose, Toyono District, Osaka Prefecture, Japan, an adaptive-reuse historic-preservation mixed-use project, combines a residence, bookstore, and restaurant into a singular cohesive envelope. An open floor plan, allows for an abundance of natural sunlight to cascade across the interior spaces. Gardens and verandas outside the property, allow for beautiful views of the northern satoyama region, and a feeling of connection and serenity with the natural environment. A significant part of the project was built by the owner with the help of local residents. Earthen walls, which are a major part of the structural elements of the building, were made of recycled material from part of the former building that was demolished. The recycled material, was combined with rice straw and fermented to give it structure. Locally sourced timber is used throughout the interiors of the project giving it a more natural element to its interior spaces. This project is a culturally important example of ways in which we can sustainably build without the need of transporting materials across vast distances increasing carbon unnecessarily. Cutting down forests in Tengah, Lentor and Dover East to intensify greenery on buildings will still result in a net increase in ambient temperatures and a weakening of climate resilience. In view of the climate crisis and biodiversity loss, we need to protect Tengah forest from further destruction while focusing on redeveloping previously developed areas instead. 🌴✨ Bali's unique rule for architecture: No building can be taller than a palm tree! ✨🌴 In Bali, there's a traditional belief that no structure should surpass the height of the island's sacred palm trees, keeping the skyline low and the island’s cultural and natural beauty intact. This regulation, known as the Tri Hita Karana principle, preserves harmony between humans, nature, and the divine. 🌿🏛️ So, if you're investing in property here, don't expect any towering skyscrapers, but enjoy the views of palm trees and the natural landscape instead! 🌺🌅 #BaliRealEstate #BaliLiving #TropicalParadise #InvestInBali #SustainableArchitecture #OwnPropertyAbroad

Stilt Houses in Setúbal, Portugal Setúbal, once the center of the sardine industry and a thriving hub for salt production, has gracefully transitioned into a serene region that still offers sustenance fishing to its inhabitants. Nestled in this historically rich area, MAST's new stilt houses are a testament to thoughtful and sustainable design. Set amidst an estuary with walking paths perfect for bird watchers and near the adventurous hills of Arrábida, this development captures the essence of Setúbal’s new identity while preserving its fishing village charm. Access to these stilt houses is thoughtfully planned via boats or winding walkways, ensuring minimal disruption to the natural landscape. We're particularly impressed with MAST's commitment to sustainability. By building offsite using locally sourced CLT, they ensure that the natural beauty remains undisturbed. This innovative approach not only protects the environment but also supports the local economy. This studio has managed to look into the future of rising sea levels without blinking. With the first units set for completion in 2025, these stilt houses are poised to become a coveted destination for those seeking a peaceful retreat in a natural setting. Whether you're a nature enthusiast or someone looking for tranquility, this seems like an idyllic escape. https://loom.ly/K6AYaJc #housing #architecture #urbanplanning

What if a metropolitan park could be designed as a vibrant carpet of activities? Earlier this year, we had the privilege of designing a metropolitan-scale park in Astana, Kazakhstan—a space that goes beyond the traditional idea of a city park. Inspired by the rich heritage of Kazakhstan’s nomadic tribes, we envisioned this park as a massive, colorful carpet where every “pixel” serves as a unique activity or infrastructure. This innovative design transforms the park into a dynamic space, catering to people of all ages and becoming a true metropolitan attraction. The project blends cultural symbolism with contemporary urban design, pushing the boundaries of what public spaces can be. With every step of the design process, our goal was to create a vibrant environment that fosters interaction, engagement, and connection within the city. Take a look at the reel showcasing the entire journey—from the first concept to the final design. We are excited to share this glimpse of our work with you. #PublicSpaces #EntertainmentHub #UrbanIntervention #MetropolitanPark #KazakhstanDesign #UrbanActivation #100architects
