FIVE LESSONS I LEARNED FROM VOLUNTEERING. Volunteering is a selfless act that makes you grow, and thrive and it inculcates in you the spirit of teamwork & other values for you to achieve your goals. I learned five invaluable lessons from my previous volunteering. 1. TEAMWORK: I volunteered with the Media and Content team. I learned more about how every task can be accomplished easily if we collaborate and work hand in hand. There is power in teamwork! 2. NETWORKING: I connected and networked well with everyone on my team and outside. Volunteering will give you space to network with people in your niche and outside your niche. 3. THE ART OF LEARNING: I got to hone my photography and videography skills. I get to learn and unlearn. I learned a great deal by observing other visual artists there and also by doing my research. 4. CONSISTENCY: There is always persistence in consistency. With volunteering, you've got to be available and show up even when you are exhausted. This can be applied in every facet of life. 5. GOOD COMMUNICATION SKILLS: My communication skills and social skills are good. During the volunteering process, I had to express my demands politely and firmly even if I was stressed or frustrated. My communication and social skills became better. Good Morning. 🤍 #Linkedin #content #volunteering #volunteers #dechosen1

Writing a new Substack article this morning. This one is on "Contribution Culture", e.g. why do people volunteer and how do you get them to do more of it for your events? Excerpt: "I spent this last weekend at our Austin regional burn, Burning Flipside. Burns are always a magical place, filled with interesting people that are bent on connecting with and contributing to each other (and just generally bent). But there is something special about Flipside. For one thing, it’s the oldest regional burn, having existed since 1998. For another, its culture is based upon the fine art of Sass. As in: being sassy, snarky, and sarcastic; not taking oneself too seriously; screwing with other people. And, most interesting to me, Flipside has a shockingly high amount of volunteer contribution. I got curious about what causes this. Why would people pay to come to a weekend when they have worked for weeks or months to prepare art, experiences, and camps? Why would they show up to said weekend and then still spend a good chunk of their time volunteering? And, why would they go between volunteering to help with all the activities their camp is providing, and for positions to help the festival overall?" Tip #4: Volunteer Whether it’s passing on skills honed in your professional life or volunteering for pure enjoyment, those who volunteer have larger social circles, report higher levels of happiness, & have a clear sense of purpose. Typically, when you retire, you engage in less social activity, but that doesn’t have to be the case. When you volunteer, you’re often exposed to many people with common interests which can strengthen your support network, increase self-confidence, & bring you & others a lot of joy. IDEAS • Consider your interests & look for opportunities that match • Look for fun and fulfilling opportunities • Determine how much time you want to commit • There are remote & on-site opportunities, figure out what works best for you • Think about your volunteering goals • Consider new possibilities & activities you’ve never done before: community theatres, museums, libraries, community centres, animal shelters, wildlife centres, sports organizations, conservation efforts, the list goes on! https://zurl.co/MIGv

Meet Nataly Zuria! Nataly is kicking off her engagement with YWCA Edmonton as the incredible photographer for our Volunteer Appreciation Project! She is an Edmonton-based graphic designer with a keen eye for detail, combining vibrancy and intentionality in her work. She is passionate about creating community, such as through her project, IDEE, that offers free opportunities for youth to engage in artistic practices. ✨ The theme for this year’s National Volunteer Appreciation Week is “Every Moment Matters”. Why does every moment matter in volunteering? This theme is a great way to emphasize that using your free time to aid others does matter, even if it's only once or if you dedicate your life to volunteering, it does not matter as long as you make the effort. This also exemplifies that volunteering comes in all shapes and forms, creating more opportunities for volunteering to occur. 💭 Do you have any advice for future volunteers? Throw yourself in the experience, not only is this an opportunity to help others but also an opportunity for you to gain experience and widen your knowledge of parts of the community you might haven't considered in the past. Volunteering is a great way to learn and become more accepting of your surroundings. There are so many ways you can volunteer, make sure to look toward volunteer opportunities in your field or in things you might be into!
