Great push forward on one of the next developments. Our 9 block of apartments. The building had had some alterations over the years, but to the detriment of the basement ability to stay dry. This week the builders have removed the concrete at the front of the build which was unbelievably higher than the dpc. So any water which didn’t drain away just made its way in to the building. Adding a French drain as a first has already made a massive improvement allowing the water to be taken away. Next is the digging down of the basement in the new year, new picture frame steels to totally open up the basement apartments bringing light flooding in to the apartments. All this is the work no one sees, but fundamentally and significantly improved the functionality of a building - doing stuff correctly. #TBT to one of our largest projects, which saw us transform a disused office block in Portsmouth into 153 apartments for students. The £11m design-and-build project also required the construction of two ground-floor retail units. Our team enhanced the building’s exterior with a new roof and masonry for the curtain walling system. All windows were replaced with high-specification Schüco windows combined with green glazed panels to bring colour to the scheme. The windows were manufactured using anodised aluminium on the outside to increase durability and improve aesthetics. Following a design recommendation from Vale Southern, a polyester powder was used to coat the inside of the windows, enabling any future repairs to be carried out more easily and cost-effectively. Internally, the new flats include studios with designated study areas, and apartments with en-suite bathrooms. Mechanical and electrical services were installed, plus two lifts. We were recently asked to assess a large section of the roof over Arthur Johnson Auction House in Nottingham. The building holds thousands of items for auction each week & the roof was starting to show signs of ingress. The existing bituminous roof had clearly been patch repaired in various places over the years. We completed numerous core samples, and an appropriate roofing system proposed. The existing roof had loose stones across the majority of the surface which were removed & the existing bituminous covering repaired accordingly. A recovery board was mechanically fastened to the metal deck, followed by StrataPlan SF 1.5mm Anthracite Single Ply Membrane.
