A Disheartening Experience with Collaboration Recently, I collaborated with a well known venue in the city for one of my events. The collaboration terms were clear and agreed upon. We informed them of minor changes well before the event, and they confirmed that we could proceed as discussed. The event brought significant marketing value to their c_£_ —highlighting it as pet-friendly on social media, local Facebook pages, and even in newspapers. Despite this, their actions have left me disappointed and questioning their professionalism. Here’s what happened: - They only requested a single tag for their story, which we honored. - Pre-event, we shared multiple videos and posts as part of the campaign, yet only one was accepted as a collaboration. This was surprising because I noticed they had shared over ten posts for other collaborations. - Post-event, my team created a heartfelt post, inviting them for collaboration acknowledgment. It's been over a week, and our invitation remains unaccepted. My follow-up messages have gone unanswered. It’s disheartening to see such a lack of professionalism. If they were unwilling to support the event, they could have communicated that openly. I’ve collaborated with many venues in the past and never faced this level of disregard. Collaboration should be about mutual growth and respect. This experience, while frustrating, has taught me to choose genuine partners who truly value shared efforts. Let’s continue to build a community that grows with each other, not at the expense of one another.

Rare is it that a tech conference has the power to wow. No new approaches to “conferencing” have emerged since before COVID. Until last week when SF Deep Tech Week gleefully took over the the Bay Area. It was REFRESHING for many reasons, primarily due the fact that this was purposefully designed NOT to solely focus on AI, but other industries like Robotics, Biotech, Aerospace, Neurotech, etc. The energy was palpable; it felt like SF was actually back. Candace had the chance to meet Andrew Cote, the brain behind it, at one of the 41+ events that happened. He was ecstatic and distracted, busily answering constant text and Discord messages, and clearly onto something. This guy claimed to have organized it in about two months. He kept telling me “I’m just going with it- making it happen as we go” - that’s the spirit we need. With over 5K people registered, much of the event was crowdsourced, along with a handful of key anchor events.You could fill out a Google Form to get your event listed on the Luma app and on the website.  It opened with a huge kick off event on the USS Hornet, and the main gimmick was airlifting Cybertrucks, a DeLorean and a kebab truck onto the ship as spectacle. It ended with more DJs and lasers at The Loom, a place where many Burning Man Project art installations are currently being built. You could buy tickets a la carte via Eventbrite, vs. paying $2,500 for conference pass. Worth mentioning, Andrew took a lot of his inspiration for the format of the event from Burning Man, and sought art cars for his events, playa DJ talent, and even had a fashion show akin to what happens in Center Camp. It made sense. Mighty jumped in by co-hosting an AI Salon billed as a “Warm Pool Party + BBQ” at a private home in Mill Valley. 300 people registered, but we only had capacity for 100. This is the second event Mighty has co-sponsored with connector extraordinaire Nicole Patrice, and her business partner Mick Eddy of Ethos VC joined in along with our main host, John Kuch, whose decks and gardens offered spaces for conversations we curated over the course of the evening. People are craving community, and still figuring out how to network again. We made it easy and relaxed in a beautiful outdoor environment, and had to usher folks out when the clock struck 11pm. Virtual events have taken the business world by storm, and I believe they're here to stay. They offer a unique mix of convenience and accessibility. No need to travel or spend time in traffic; you can connect with people from different continents just using your laptop. This convenience is a game-changer for entrepreneurs and business owners who often juggle numerous responsibilities. Virtual events break geographical barriers. You can interact with a global audience, reaching markets you might not have considered before. This can be a massive boost for any business trying to expand its horizons. - Cost-effectiveness is another perk. - Without the expenses of venues, travel, and logistics, businesses can invest in content and innovation. - More people can join these events, widening opportunities to network. The technology behind virtual events is also evolving fast. With tools like virtual reality and augmented reality, the experience can be really immersive. This means you can engage with prospective clients and partners in creative ways, like virtual product demos or interactive Q&A sessions. Of course, virtual networking has challenges, like the lack of physical interaction, which can make it harder to build personal connections. But as digital innovators, it's up to us to find ways to bridge that gap. Maybe a mix of virtual and in-person events could be the sweet spot. Virtual events are reshaping the networking landscape, and businesses that adapt will be well-placed to thrive. I’m excited to see how they evolve and what new possibilities they'll bring. As we head into 2025, there’s a question on many minds: Is the conference and networking space dead? Over the past few years, virtual events, Zoom calls, and online webinars have become the norm. But, is this truly the future, or is there still value in face-to-face networking, especially in the tech industry? From my experience, there’s something irreplaceable about being in the same room with people, shaking hands, and having those organic, real-time conversations. At Hire Odesa, we’ve seen the impact of these connections firsthand. When you attend a conference or a networking event, you’re not just exchanging business cards—you’re building relationships that can turn into long-term partnerships, collaborations, and opportunities. That said, virtual events have brought undeniable convenience. The ability to connect globally without the hassle of travel has opened doors to broader audiences and made participation easier for many. But here’s the challenge: can virtual events truly replace the authentic connections made in person? Can we replicate the spontaneity, the energy, and the trust that comes from face-to-face interaction? In the tech space, this is a key consideration. Emerging technologies and cutting-edge projects require collaboration across different sectors, and while virtual platforms help, they sometimes lack the depth of in-person meetings where ideas are sparked, and partnerships are formed over a cup of coffee or a casual conversation. So, what’s the future? I don’t think in-person events are going away. In fact, they may become more valuable as we navigate this hybrid landscape. Conferences and networking events in 2025 may evolve into a combination of in-person exclusivity with virtual accessibility, giving us the best of both worlds. What do you think? In-Person Events > Virtual Events. I know, I know, quite controversial these days, but hear me out: I do agree that virtual events have their place. They are valuable, easy, & efficient, but they will never be able to replicate the experiences that can be created in person. Humans have been gathering in person since the beginning, and it is in our DNA to have conversations, learn, share stories, shake hands, give hugs, and connect in person. As we become more virtual, global loneliness continues to climb. It seems that the recent emphasis on making our society virtual fails to recognize the exchange of energy between humans that takes place in face-to-face interactions, and is the only way to fully "scratch the itch" for genuine connection. This was the third time this event was held in Melbourne, and it just gets better every time. It was great to see so many people that I haven't seen in a while (John Mullins 👀🤗 ). However, this is more than just an industry/networking event post....its an appreciation post and a special shoutout to Aaron Luxmoore - our super connector, whose incredible ability to bring people together has been the driving force behind the success of these events.
