As a techy global health foundation, we followed the discussions about #AI in health at the World Health Assembly last week with interest. Here's our summary of headline themes from across different sessions! 🙌 We all have a moral obligation to make AI work to make health accessible for all. AI tools can help solve health workforce shortages, information overload and manage the rising burden of NCDs to name but a few applications. 🔎 Focus on the ‘pain points’ where AI can make a big difference in the health system (e.g. screening and diagnosis of cancers or diabetes, chest X-Rays for TB ) demonstrate its value and build trust. 📊 AI tools won’t help anyone if they’re not based on reliable, diverse and representative data sets reflecting the populations they’re being used in. 👩⚕️ AI is primarily about augmenting human capabilities in global health not replacing humans. For example, there’s A LOT of reporting and information in healthcare, so use generative AI speech to text to reduce this work for healthcare providers – meaning more time for patients! 💛 ‘Do no harm’ must remain the first priority by always using AI ethically and safely – requires not just common regulatory frameworks but also regulatory institutions to manage it. #WHA77 #AIforHealth #AIforGood #GlobalHealth Rich Bryson Onica Nonhlanhla Makwakwa Dr Emmanuel Agogo FRCGP HonMFPH Louisa Poole FCA PHILIPPE JACON Neha J Tanna M.D. MBA Jamie Starr Duncan Harris Bruce Adams World Health Organization

Philosophy Student | AI Ethics | Critical Thinker | Exploring the Intersection of AI and Healthcare | Advocate for Human-Centered Technology
How AI Can Bring Relief and Transform Healthcare My friends recently encouraged me to express publicly these thoughts that I have been thinking for couple of years. Acknowledging that many of them have already been discussed within the healthcare field. I decided to share them publicly because I believe that every perspective adds value. The conversation around AI in healthcare is one that affects us all deeply. Healthcare is personal. Whether you’re a patient waiting for answers or a healthcare professional struggling with burnout, the stakes are high. Life is unpredictable and so many of us know someone that has passed away unexpectedly. Or has been falsely diagnosed. AI offers hope, not just for efficiency, but for making healthcare more human and compassionate. A world where your health is being monitored in real time, with AI flagging concerns before they become problems. The relief of no longer having to endlessly Google your symptoms or carry the burden of being your own, or a family member's health advocate. Personally, I’ve felt how exhausting it can be to navigate the healthcare system alone. AI could ease that burden too, offering both support and relief. For doctors and healthcare professionals, AI can handle the data heavy tasks, allowing them to focus on what truly matters. Connecting with patients. 🫱🏽🫲🏻 It’s not about replacing anyone; it’s about making sure that professionals have the time and energy to provide the best care possible. 🏥 In the coming weeks, I’ll explore from different perspectives how AI can transform healthcare for both patients and providers. While keeping the human connection at the heart of it all. ❤️ #humancenteredAI

Reducing inequity within healthcare is one of the things I'm most passionate about. Over the years, it's been inspiring to see how new tech out there (like AI tools) are helping improve healthcare equity and outcomes. "AI’s capabilities in leveraging multiple different types of data to predict and intervene at all stages of a patient’s journey make it uniquely well placed to address the main causes of health inequities," write Carol Cruickshank, Cian Wade, and Junaid Bajwa. I completely agree; personally, I think the most promising capability of AI in healthcare is identifying at-risk patients. If we want to improve health outcomes for underserved populations, we need to make preventive care a priority, and AI can help with exactly that. #AI #HealthEquity #Healthcare

AI is here and here to stay! In the realm of health, AI presents both immense potential and significant risks. When not properly managed, AI has the ability to exacerbate disparities and harm individuals and society. However, when effectively implemented, AI can help to pinpoint and diminish inequalities, save lives, enhance the work of healthcare providers, and shield communities from public health crises. AI is poised to play a pivotal role in global health by leveraging cross-border data and populations, uncovering systemic inequities, and propelling health systems towards greater resilience and sustainability. As we move towards integrated and human-centric learning health systems, the possibilities for AI in healthcare are endless. Let's work together to harness the power of AI for the betterment of global health! #AIinHealthcare #GlobalHealth #DigitalHealth #HealthEquity #HealthTech #InnovationinHealthcare #AIforGood #OECDAI 🔗 https://brnw.ch/21wJElx

Imagine a 🌍 where AI helps bridge healthcare gaps to deliver better care to all. By using data to predict risks and address barriers, AI offers a real opportunity to improve outcomes for underserved communities. It can identify patients who might otherwise be overlooked, break down language barriers, and extend quality care to rural areas. Woo hoo! Carol Cruickshank, Cian Wade, and Junaid Bajwa explain how thoughtful AI design could make healthcare more equitable—if we prioritize it. Could this be the breakthrough needed to close long-standing health disparities? https://lnkd.in/g62G34z7 #HealthEquity #AIinHealthcare #DigitalHealth #PatientCare #HealthcareInnovation #MedicalInnovation Image alt-text: Spiral of colorful capsule-shaped pills on a black background.

An insightful report, Health Care In Focus, from Evernorth Research Institute reveals baseline race and age differences in beliefs in accuracy and openness to utilization of #AI in healthcare (see visual) We know that #ArtificialIntelligence in healthcare has the potential to revolutionize #diagnostics, treatment, and patient outcomes, yet it also carries the risk of exacerbating #health inequities. Some areas I’m monitoring for equity considerations are: ⚪ #Bias in #Data and #Algorithms ⚪ #Access Barriers to AI-driven #Technologies ⚪ Cost and #Affordability Challenges ⚪ #Language and Cultural Barriers ⚪ Disparities in #Digital #Literacy ⚪ #Privacy and Surveillance Concerns ⚪ Limited #Customization for Local Contexts ⚪ Algorithmic Opaqueness What are you monitoring, most concerned and most optimistic about? For me, the #investment in and application of AI to achieve the quintuple aims of #healthcare comes with a solemn responsibility – to ensure careful design and implementation with #equity in mind. I see addressing issues like biased data, ensuring equal #access to AI-driven tools, and adapting AI models to diverse populations as a table stakes mandate to ensure the transformative potential of AI application in healthcare does not worsen existing #health inequities. I encourage a read of the Health Care In Focus report (link in Comments) and thanks to The Cigna Group and Evernorth Health Services for making it available. #digitalhealth #medicine #healthinsurance #machinelearning #precisionmedicine #DTx #digitaltherapeutics #marketaccess #strategy PalmHealthCo🌴

Is there any application of AI in the field of public health, or will it replace human healthcare professionals in the public health field?🤖 Here's my take on it: ☑ AI empowers healthcare professionals, augmenting their capabilities and optimizing their decision-making processes. ☑With AI, public health practitioners can leverage predictive analytics to identify at-risk populations and devise targeted interventions for disease prevention. ☑AI algorithms analyze vast amounts of data, enabling early detection of outbreaks and abnormal health patterns. ☑AI assists in resource allocation, optimizing the distribution of vaccines, supplies, and personnel based on data-driven insights. It's time to dispel the myth! AI is not here to replace but to enhance and support public health efforts. Embracing AI's potential allows us to deliver more effective healthcare interventions and improve health outcomes for all. Let's harness the power of AI and shape the future of public health together! 💪🌍 What are your thoughts on the role of AI in public health?
