In honour of both Indigenous History Month and Pride in June, Teck commissioned artwork from Kayla Phillips Washington, an artist of Nlaka’pamux and Tsilhqot’in heritage from Nooaitch Indian Band. At its center is a turtle, symbolizing Turtle Island, adorned with four directional colors. Inside the turtle, rainbow hues represent inclusivity and mindfulness towards the 2SLGBTQ+ community. Kayla says “I have also included Nlaka’pamux language in my piece. It’s a Nlaka’pamux quote that has stuck with me when I think of my nation, ‘We are strong,’ because we are strong people.”

"Americans are presently situated within a political, cultural, and social context where collective values and legal rights are being challenged by those who hold power and privilege. While this is not unique, it is a time in which we, as a society, must recognize the critical importance of historical accuracy and the need to build the skills necessary to discern facts about who we are collectively and as individuals. This is especially true for LGBT+ individuals, whose rights and histories continue to be contested in the courts of law and public opinion. A more complete and intentional social studies curriculum is one method through which educators, as change-agents, can contribute to this collective need. The above quote is from the National Council for the Social Studies Position Statement on Contextualizing LGBTQ History, unanimously approved by the Board in 2019 - and authored by History UnErased's leadership. Read the full position statement here: https://lnkd.in/e3N7v3j History UnErased is providing K-12 schools with the curriculum, training, and ongoing support they need to realize the position statement's vision of advancing the ideals of American democracy through the process of history, civics, and social studies education. History Professor Dr. Robin Vose has been awarded a STU Course Release Award to write a book of popular history on the Camino de Santiago, which will explain not only the historical and religious origins of the Camino but also its later political, cultural, and economic dimensions. Dr. Vose's book will fill a void in literature devoted to the Camino, and his exploration of previously marginalized topics, such as Jewish-converso mysticism and the importance of the Camino in certain LGBTQ+ circles, will be of particular interest. "I look forward to sharing my findings with my students and hope my book will help new audiences deeply understand the Camino's true potential and perhaps even someday explore it for themselves." As I reflect on last week’s queer PoC catch up and looking forward to the next one at the end of the month, I’m reminded about sharing cultures. In friendships and relationships where cultural differences exists, it’s important to bring in and share your cultural identity. But how do we that when we are in interracial relationships? Here are some tips. 1. Ask questions about your partners’ family background. This will help you to gain perspective and put you in a position of being able to provide support. 2. Acknowledge the difficult aspects of their culture as it will give you an understanding of your partner and the perhaps some of the struggles they have faced. 3. Exchanging of food is a great way to explore culture by experiencing different tastes, exploring customs or traditions. 4. Share travel stories even learn some new words or phrases. 5. Celebrate your uniqueness as individuals but also as a couple. You both have something unique to share with your world and each other. 5. Honour, respect and acknowledge your differences but also CELEBRATE them. How can we shift BIPOC queer representation in music? In an industry that prides itself on self-expression and freedom of creativity, it's time we acknowledge the marginalized voices and talents that often go unheard. While the music industry has taken steps towards inclusivity, we can't continue to turn a blind eye to the hardships faced by queer artists, especially those who identify as Black and transgender. We need to invest in mentorship programs designed specifically for supporting queer artists, increase representation in media, curate safe creative environments that promote diversity, and provide harm reduction & inclusion strategies to music business execs to ensure the success and protection of all talent, regardless of how they identify. ✊🏾✨ #dei #musicindustry #transawareness #representationmatters #musicindustry #lgbtq #talentmanagement #recordingartist

Happy Pride Month! For members of the 2SLGBTQ+ community in Canada, Pride Month is an opportunity to celebrate how far we’ve come as a community while also pledging to work much harder to fight for queer people whose rights are still being undermined here at home and around the world. The backdrop to this year’s Pride Month is not all sunshine and lolipops. We know that incidents of homophobia are on the rise in Canada; we also know all too well that transphobic rhetoric is spiking among some in our political class: both in Canada and the U.S. The result: regressive legislation and government policies being tabled at the provincial and state levels that put lives in jeopardy. We must be clear about this and send the unambiguous message that queer people won’t be used as pawns in American-style culture wars for political gain. Lastly, we can’t forget that Pride has — and will always have — its roots deeply cemented in protest. As we look forward to celebrating this month over the coming 30 days, let’s not forget our queer history and the progress we’ve made through blood, sweat and tears; but let’s also remind ourselves of how far we still have to go, and be conscious of the millions of people around the globe who are relying on us to fight for their human rights. Happy Pride! Let’s make this month a memorable one. #PrideMonth #2SLGBTQ #HumanRights #cdnpoli

Standing Together for Pride ❤🧡💛💚💙💜🏳️🌈 June is Pride Month, a time to celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community's history, resilience, and ongoing fight for equality. 🥳🚀💕 Yet, despite the progress we've made, discrimination and hatred still persist. 🥲 Recently, I came across an instance of this negativity online, and it serves as a reminder of the work that remains. It's disheartening to see such prejudice towards a community that simply wants to live authentically. ❤ Love is Love ❤ At its core, Pride is about celebrating love and acceptance. Everyone deserves the right to live authentically and be treated with dignity. Silence in the face of hate only allows it to grow. 🌈 What can we do to create a more inclusive world? ✍️ Educate ourselves and others: Knowledge is power. Let's challenge misinformation and promote understanding. ✍️ Celebrate diversity: Everyone brings unique value to the table. Let's embrace our differences and create a more inclusive environment. ✍️ Speak up against injustice: If you see something, say something. Don't be a silent bystander to hate speech or discrimination. Together, we can create a world where everyone feels safe and supported to be who they are. 🏳️🌈 #PrideMonth #LGBTQIA #DiversityAndInclusion #Allyship

I know I’ve mentioned the 100s of brilliant UK bookshops before, but here’s more, in this new Art Council funded research paper - so its official: "Indies are powerhouses of cultural enrichment and community engagement nurturing readers and writers alike. Indies play a key role in providing affordable and inclusive access to culture with 92% of them running activities and author events, and one in two organising +20 events a year. 65% of indies support local literary & arts festivals Grants still seen as a major enabler, but easier access and resources could improve impacts." The key findings of the Arts Council Report are: 92% of indies run activities and events for their local communities, including author events 1 in 2 indies organise 20 plus events per year 48% of indies organise book fairs at schools 45% organise for authors to go into local schools 65% support local literary, music and arts festivals Nearly 4 in 10 bookshops organise creative writing/writing workshops 78% see grants and funding as a key enabler to sustain their role in the community 71% would like straightforward access to funds for events and activities 71% would like more support from publishers to run events https://lnkd.in/eK43rfcv
