The Joint Higher Education Event will showcase how different areas of geoscience can work collaboratively and highlight the main issues impacting the community. As most hydrogeologists will know, hydrogeology often works alongside various other disciplines, such as engineering, ecology and social sciences.
In 2020, the Hydrogroup became aware that the demand for hydrogeological skills within the UK was not currently being met. This was attributed to a range of reasons; insufficient capacity in the training and education sectors, loss of people from the industry and a lack of students applying for relevant courses.
Further research, conducted by Mike Streetly in 2022, found less enrolment onto post-graduate hydrogeology courses and a strong demand from employers overseas - both of which have reduced the numbers of hydrogeologists in the UK.
The Joint Higher Education Event aims to provide opportunities to establish and build a strategic alliance of stakeholders to work together to change negative perceptions, create influence and establish a widespread understanding of geoscience as fundamental to the modern world.
