My 5 biggest struggles working in Anesthesia Consulting are: 1. Lack of providers. 2. The compensation market always changing. 3. Constant negotiations with EVERYONE. 4. Constant insurance changes. 5. Lack of trust from hospital administrators. Anyone reading this who has the same struggles, here’s my advice: 1. Get used to it. This isn’t changing for 5-10 years. 2. You can’t control the market, so go with it. 3. Get better at negotiating. The reps help. 4. See # 2 5. Put yourself in their shoes. Everyone is asking for money these days. You might be making this mistake without even realising it! Eleven years ago, a client of mine was busy offering free consultations, spending anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours a day on these appointments. He knew he needed to take action but was hesitant to dedicate a team member full-time. I advised him to start small — offering free consultations just one day a week. Fast forward to today, and he now has two full-time TCOs who fully utilise every aspect of the role. Not only did this approach save him money, but it also allowed him to increase his hourly rate! I want to emphasise something important: a free consultation is a non-clinical appointment. When dentists offer free consultations, they're essentially undervaluing their expertise and hurting their business in the long run. One of the key aspects of the TCO role is being able to give time to the patient for free — time that doesn’t cost the dentist any money!
