Anyone use ZoLa New York City's Zoning & Land Use Map recently? It's great to determine the zoning district of a particular parcel and learn about intersecting map layers. But it doesn't have everything you're looking for. You still need to refer to the NYC Zoning resolution to calculate ZFA, building height, Max dwelling units and minimum parking in order to get an idea of what you can build. The Hidden World of Urban Planning Did you know that urban planning is more than just building layouts? Behind every new development lies a complex set of factors like land use, zoning laws, and infrastructure integration. One of the lesser-known concepts is “transect planning,” a method used to design mixed-use communities where urban and natural areas seamlessly coexist. A great example of this is Seaside, Florida, one of the first developments to apply transect planning principles. Seaside integrates everything from dense urban zones to tranquil, nature-filled areas, creating a walkable community where businesses, homes, and green spaces exist in harmony. The balance between built and natural environments provides a blueprint for future sustainable developments. Next time you walk through a well-designed neighborhood, think about how every detail, from street width to building height, was meticulously planned!
