We celebrate the wrong leaders... those with dramatic stories rather than those who simply get the job done. This TEDx talk from Martin Guttman will resonate for many. He outlines how we often see leadership potential in those who speak more, appear confident and who have a dramatic story of overcoming something (usually of their own making) - this is known as the Action Fallacy. This means that those who take the time to plan, investigate and listen to their team/experts tend to get overlooked because by comparison there is no drama- the job just gets done and it looks easy. The time and effort that went into creating a team dynamic that functions that well often does not get recognised. Martin invites us to reimagine what good leadership looks like by ignoring the Captains of crises and instead celebrate those who mitigate drama. P.S. I recently watched an excellent TED Talk by historian Martin Gutmann, called "Are we celebrating the wrong leaders?" As the title suggests, it highlights an unfortunate tendency for us to celebrate leaders for their dramatic words and actions during times of crisis, rather than those exceptional leaders who manage to avoid the crisis to begin with. We have a tendency to celebrate leaders who have great stories attached to their exploits, and disaster or conflict are often at the heart of entertaining stories. Yet a leader who avoids the crisis due to careful planning and quick thinking are less likely to receive the same amount of attention, as their story isn't as compelling to an outsider. Gutmann's argument is very interesting and should encourage us to be more mindful of what qualities we celebrate in leadership, as this can help us be better leaders ourselves #LeadershipStrategy #ProfessionalDevelopment
