"We could have a food system that truly nourishes the world today and into the future. We could have a food system that reduces pressure on nature and even help restore some of it," says Jonathan Foley, sustainability scientist. "And we could have a food system that actually stops climate change that's entirely possible and at our fingertips today. And we could do all of this at the same time." As Jonathan Foley highlights in his Ted talk, there’s an opportunity to build an entirely better food system that stops climate change, and it doesn’t require new technology. Needed solutions are simple, and yet they are not fully deployed. So how does Homegrown contribute to the solutions outlined? 1. It promotes access to fresh, local and seasonal fruits and vegetables supporting an increased share of plant-based food consumed. 2. It improves food system efficiency by connecting growers and consumers on a hyper local scale to reduce food loss. 3. It educates its community of consumers and growers about regenerative agriculture and ultimately rewards growers that improve their farming methods. The article below covers the content of the Ted talk which you can find here for reference: https://lnkd.in/e33ys_Af

"Project Drawdown has found that reducing food loss and waste is one of the largest climate solutions across all sectors, not just in the food system. Plus, it could provide additional benefits to land, water, and biodiversity while also improving food availability and food security worldwide." Our solution - domesticating new crops from climate-adapted native food species that also provide habitat - has the potential to fundamentally change the global food system. We can reduce CO2, restore habitat, and create lasting food security, we just need to find the right mission-aligned investors to support our National Science Foundation-funded research and help us take it to the next level

Tackling hunger and climate change cannot happen in silos. We need an interconnected approach to succeed and achieve #SDG2. #COP28 highlighted this by including food systems in its agenda - a big moment. Food systems play a major role in addressing climate change and sustainability challenges on a global scale. Check out the interview to Stefanos Fotiou, Director of the UN Food Systems Coordination Hub ⬇⬇ At the Shamba Centre, we are working to find systemic solutions to make food systems more sustainable. https://lnkd.in/eQgJcsqm

Our food systems not only help combat climate change but also play a vital role in building strong, thriving, resilient, healthy, and happy communities. Food holds immense power, and this power is currently being abused. Embracing indigenous farming practices, supporting regenerative agriculture, transitioning to biodegradable packaging, imposing stricter limits on food waste for commercial and individual use, and implementing stronger policies that promote the use of local goods while restricting imported foods are all effective ways to initiate food system transformation. These changes can start on a small scale and eventually expand globally.

« The more we know, the higher is the risk » « We are at a risk of a danger zone TODAY ! » Message 1: « Buckle up » (to be prepared to the consequences of climat change). Message 2: the health of the planet must be kept intact !! For that, we need to respect the nine planet boundaries >> solutions = rapid transition away from fossil fuel, transition to circular business models, sustainable diets and food systems, scaling regeneration and restoration of the marine systems, soils, forests and wet lands. Our choice: to move fast ! #tippingpoints #climatchange

Extremely insightful article about our massive global food chain and its contribution to climate change, balanced in being not too alarming, not too positive about it, but quite realistic. We have a significantly inefficient food system today (and unequal as well), but do we actually realize how big and how inefficient? A recommended read. :)

Food has a BIG climate problem! What we eat and how we grow is responsible for over one-third of all greenhouse gas emissions when you factor in indirect emissions. For how to fix this crisis, check out this article from Project Drawdown's Jonathan Foley: http://bit.ly/3Wk6z3G
