I help purpose-oriented organizations and leaders grow. Strategist. Collaborator. Trusted Partner. Senior People Operations Leader.
The top HR and DEIB practitioners that I know get their professional development beyond seminars and white papers. They learn what is happening in the world to deepen their knowledge and empathy even when they are not “on the job.” I just watched a movie that counts as professional development. “Conversion” with Elena Joy Thurston https://lnkd.in/gipjnctX I met Elena when she interviewed me for a research project on trauma-informed HR practices. Firstly, what a kind, humorous, intelligent person. Secondly, connecting with her led me to this documentary on conversion therapy. The folks who share their stories demonstrate monumental vulnerability, resilience, awareness, and kindness in the face of torment, trauma, shame, and ostracization. When I think about how folks show up at work, I land on one of my core beliefs: What you don’t know about someone is often more important than what you do know. Corollary belief – I don’t deserve to know those things by default of my role. Being a leader in fostering a sense of belonging in the workplace, I need to stay curious, open. Avoid lazily stopping at, “it’s a performance problem.” Broadening my knowledge helps me write equitable policy, create inclusive practices, and be ready to respond (not react). For more on trauma-informed HR practices, check out Shae Noble, SHRM-SCP for the co-authored paper and for when they share the results of the survey and interviews. #LGBTQ+ #Belonging #DEIB

Thank you for tackling this challenge Mike Michael Romig and openly working on these not-so-easy topics, for giving the best to be an ally! I have encountered this reactive response, often as defensive behaviour in my personal and professional life over and over again. Also I have noticed this trigger, this sense of feeling threatened by addressing this topic within in my direct community as well as within myself, with all privileges I was and was not aware of. Diving-in gave me a new perspective, allowed a deeper understanding personally and systematically. Only with a new, deeper understanding something new can emerge, a shift can happen. And the challenge is on for y'all! (not only all male identifing people) 🤩 Noticed the trigger, whatever privilege is addressed? Well done!💡 Have you been willing and able to go deeper and try to feel and understand these "sensitivities" - personally and systematically? Again, well done! First steps towards more equality...🙌
Robert Franken has provokingly listed 5 things Men* MUST understand about how the systems we are in and the privileges they give us create a reality which is not even one we want. If you can move past the initial trigger of words like "Men" "MUST" and "Privilege" in one sentence, and are still reading this sentence... then you should really click on the article and spend 10 minutes deepening your awareness (and ability to act differently)... oh and probably get triggered another 5 times (at least) 😅 😘
5 insights men* need to understand
