Why is it so hard to escape poverty?

Escaping the poverty cycle is not merely a matter of individual willpower but a complex interplay of systemic factors, education, opportunities, and policy interventions. It’s a reminder that societal structures play a significant role in shaping individual destinies and underscores the importance of collective efforts in fostering social mobility. The question is not just how we can help individuals climb out of poverty but how we can transform the system so that fewer people fall into it in the first place. Is it time to rethink our approach towards poverty alleviation?

While we can’t change the system all at once right now, employers have an opportunity to take steps towards that change. This is where employers can be of benefit through wellness programming. If employers take the time to understand their employees’ social determinants of health, they can develop and establish a culture of wellness where the employer meets their employees at their most basic needs. By providing employees with a range of services like childcare support, nutrition assistance, physical fitness resources, mental health support, and financial education, culturally competent wellness programs can empower their employees with the necessary tools and knowledge to overcome challenges they might face, while feeling supported and not isolated.

In order to escape the welfare trap and be lifted up and out to have financial independence again, you need “more than enough” to be able to survive without assistance in a world with exhorbitant housing costs and low wages. Most places where I live require you to earn 3x’s the amount of monthly rent. When rent is about $1,000 for a one bedroom, you must be making around $3,000 per month in order to qualify for housing. Most jobs do not even come close to earning that much money. You have to have “more than enough” to get out and have enough for both essentials and be able to be safe and keep yourself out of poverty and make sure you don’t dip below the line of no return. People get trapped and they lose hope.

Shifting the narrative from blame to understanding and action is crucial for creating a just and equitable society where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

So long as society is governed by ego-based governments with illogical policies, many possible solutions will stay in the dark recesses of brilliant minds.

To combat the welfare trap and consequently help break the cycle of poverty, it is necessary to adopt a multifaceted approach that combines continuous support, eliminates the need for welfare benefits, and invests in education and training. The implementation of policies such as Universal Basic Income can also be explored but redesigned to provide people with their housing, food, and transportation needs.

Yes. Make Thomas Sowell mandatory reading in school so culture change may change policies and worldview.
