Hello connections !! "Micro-LIDAR" It refers to compact, lightweight LIDAR systems designed for applications where traditional, larger LIDAR setups are impractical. These miniaturized versions utilize the same principle as standard LIDAR—emitting laser pulses and measuring the time it takes for them to return after bouncing off objects—to create detailed three-dimensional information about the surrounding environment. The primary advantages of micro-LIDAR include its portability, lower power consumption, and the ability to be mounted on small platforms like drones (UAVs) or integrated into handheld devices. This makes micro-LIDAR ideal for applications in precision agriculture, archaeology, small-scale mapping, infrastructure inspection, and environmental monitoring, among others. The development of micro-LIDAR technology represents a significant advancement in making spatial data collection more accessible and versatile across various scientific, industrial, and consumer applications. #snsinstitutions #snsdesignthinkers #designthinking

Smart Mapping, Safer Missions: LiDAR Robots Redefine Disaster Relief Operations Fraunhofer FKIE researchers have developed an advanced robotic system that utilizes LiDAR technology to safely and accurately survey hazardous areas. Designed to support emergency services in disasters such as chemical spills or floods, the system provides critical situational awareness without endangering personnel. By emitting 1.3 million laser pulses per second, the LiDAR module generates highly precise 3D models of environments—including buildings, rooms, and objects—with centimeter-level accuracy. The system integrates data from up to six cameras to create a vivid, colorized 360-degree view of the surroundings. During operation, the robot pre-processes data, with final visualizations completed afterward. It can map an area of 400 x 400 meters in three hours or deliver a preliminary overview within an hour. Autonomous navigation in GPS-deprived indoor settings is achieved through a virtual GPS system derived from pre-mapped building dimensions. Flexible and versatile, the technology can be mounted on drones and other vehicles to suit various terrains. It also supports integration with sensors for detecting toxic gases or radiation, making it invaluable for military and emergency response applications.
