NTT, NTT East, NTT West and NEC Corporation have successfully demonstrated the integration of optical fiber sensing functions into the #IOWN All-Photonics Network (#APN). By analyzing vibration data collected from underground optical fiber communication cables in Osaka City, the team was able to visualize real-time traffic conditions with high granularity. This technology has the potential to simplify traffic flow measurement and is expected to be further developed for commercial adoption through continued collaboration and discussions. New EPIC member Vodafone the Málaga R&D lab aims to advance semiconductor technologies and establish a multivendor ecosystem following O-RAN standard architecture. Utilizing silicon photonic technology, the lab addresses the telecom industry challenges of power consumption and limited processor performance. While silicon photonics has enhanced data transmission with low latency, the lab aims to reduce energy consumption further and enhance RAN signal processing. Collaboration with telecom and silicon photonics leaders focuses on replacing power-consuming digital modules with silicon photonic processing. Photonics Finland's Juha Purmonen on the new EU-Backed Finnish Chips Competence Centre (FiCCC) FiCCC aims to empower SMEs by providing access to pilot lines, design platforms and technical resources to scale up innovations like photonic integrated circuits (PICs) and optoelectronics. By fostering collaboration and supporting infrastructure, FiCCC strengthens Europe’s photonics ecosystem and advances chip sovereignty. "By advancing high-performance, energy-efficient system-on-chip designs and specialised manufacturing processes, FiCCC will play a critical role in reducing Europe’s reliance on external supply chains and bolstering self-sufficiency in chip technologies," he said. A big congratulations to our member ALUVIA Photonics on an incredible achievement. ALUVIA Photonics announces the successful demonstration of its next-generation C and L-band integrated optical amplifiers, known as Erbium-Doped Waveguide Amplifiers (PIC-EDWAs). Developed in collaboration with PHIX Photonics Assembly, these amplifiers leverage Aluvia’s proprietary AlOx:Er3+ gain technology to deliver high external fiber-to-fiber gain (>25 dB) and low noise figure (comparable to EDFA’s), while offering integration possibilities on various PIC platforms, like silicon photonics. These new devices mark a significant milestone in advancing amplifier integration for optical communications and quantum computing. #Cell-Free #massive #MIMO (#CF-mMIMO) is in these days deeply investigated as a promising technology credited to overtake in the future more traditional multicell massive MIMO (#mMIMO) deployments. In many papers, including mine, CF-mMIMO and mMIMO are compared as standalone systems. However, it is reasonable to assume that CF-mMIMO will be gradually deployed in areas where mMIMO networks are already in place and will stay operational for a while. In the following paper, currently under review and available as an ArXiv preprint, we study the issue of cooperation and co-existence between multicell mMIMO and CF-mMIMO deployments. We examine three potential integration scenarios and compare them against a baseline multicell mMIMO system. The study presents algorithms for downlink beamforming, AP-UE association, power control, and meeting the FH requirement, conducting a comprehensive performance evaluation through extensive numerical simulations, shedding light on the performance outcomes associated with the diverse cooperation levels and the several solutions delineated in the paper.
