The more money you put into these IPOs, the more chances you’ll get an allotment? 😜 Yes, let’s understand this type… I’m talking about SME IPOs, which are different from Main Board IPOs when it comes to allotment. What’s the difference and how can we benefit? 💭 Normally, in a main board IPO, there are 3 categories: - Retail: This has a minimum requirement of around INR 10,000 up to INR 2 Lakh. - HNI: This has a minimum requirement of around INR 2 Lakh up to INR 10 Lakh. - Big or Ultra HNI: This has a minimum requirement of above INR 10 Lakh. In all these 3 cases, allotment is done on a random basis, hence it does not matter how many lots you go for. Now, let’s come to the twist. In the case of an SME IPO, there are only 2 categories: - Retail: Again with a minimum requirement of around INR 10,000 up to INR 2 Lakh. - HNI: This has a minimum requirement of around INR 2 Lakh with no upper limit. Here, in the HNI category, the allotment is done on a proportional basis, which means the more lots you go for, the higher chances of you getting an IPO. Didn’t see that coming right? I felt the same when I read about this. Just a small disclaimer, usually SME IPOs are riskier compared to main board IPOs as the market cap is smaller, the stock has less liquidity, and usually has a shorter history to analyze. So unless you are solely applying for capturing the gray market premium, please do your analysis. Like if this added some value to your day 👇

Vikas Khemani, Founder of Carnelian Asset Management & Advisors, shares his perspective on the IPO market and its potential for retail investors. He emphasizes the need for cautious evaluation of each IPO, stating that not all offerings are worthwhile. Khemani advises retail investors to avoid getting caught up in hype, especially with companies that perform well initially but may lose value over time. He suggests looking at companies that went public 3-4 years ago and are now trading below their IPO price, as they could present better opportunities. Khemani also warns that even average-quality companies are getting listed in a bull market, making it crucial for investors to be vigilant and selective.
