Today, after 168 years, Birmingham-Southern College is shutting down due to financial instability. The BSC baseball team, backed by a $100K GoFundMe, begins play in the D-III College World Series this afternoon—for a school that doesn't exist anymore. (via Jason Sciavicco)
I grew up in Alabama and knew people who went to Birmingham Southern. I've been following the story the last couple of years as they dealt with a funding shortage. There was a recent attempt to get a $30M loan but that didn't work out, and that was the final financial straw for the school. They announced this would be their last term, and they have closed their doors. Then the baseball team went and did this. I hope they win it all. ⚾ 🏆
