Using a TIC for Search? Many firefighters are unaware of how a victim may or may not present through the lens of a TIC. We offer three rules to consider when using a TIC with the understanding that a TIC does NOT replace a fundamental hands-on search as TICs are not X-Ray vision. 1) Background temperature: If the environment is hot, and the victim is alive and skin is visible they may appear dark, cold or gray. If the environment is ambient or cold, the victim may appear white hot. 2) Body Temperature: If the victim is alive, their skin is regulating temperature which will determine how they appear on the TIC (if their skin is visible and if they are not covered up with debris). If the victim is deceased, they have become a passive emitter, and they are no longer emitting energy but absorbing it. The victim will match the background or blend in with the environment. 3) Thermal Imaging Camera: Depending on the brand and programming of the TIC and the application mode used the victim may appear differently or may not appear at all. For example, many fire service TICs lose detail when they switch to low sensitivity causing the cooler areas to darken down or disappear. This can limit the end user's ability to see in those areas. Therefore, for this reason and many more, we recommend all TIC scans begin low to look for life first. We hope this information is helpful.
