We are often asked about SBSP and its impact on the world we live in. I recently shared this explanation with a customer. While it is true SBSP brings additional energy to Earth that would normally pass by, the total amount is tiny compared to the Sun's even in our wildest dreams of SBSP. If the projected area of the Earth is 128M square kilometers (radius of 6378 km), the incident sunlight at 1366 W/m^2 is 174,569 Terawatts. 27% of that is ultraviolet light which is absorbed by the atmosphere (47,133 TW). Thankfully, the remaining incident energy is either reflected back into space as visible light or whose absorbed heat is radiated away (mostly at night). This is how we have such a stable temperature on our planet. Humans only use about 10 TW across all forms of energy - which ultimately turn into heat. If everyone on the planet (10B of us in 2050) used what we average in America (10kW), that would be 100 TW. This is so tiny compared to the existing energy balance that we couldn't even measure it. We have problems measuring the total energy balance today - which we call the Top of Atmosphere Radiation Anomaly. For those of us looking to bring SBSP energy down from orbit as radio waves, we selected frequencies that don't get absorbed by the atmosphere (our is 10GHz). This is the same reason we use radio for communications. In this way the useful energy on the ground is a very large fraction of what is collected in orbit (98-100% efficient). The last bit around wireless power transfer is health and human safety. Firstly, the microwave power beam intensity can't be high - or the ionosphere would heat up enough to become a conductor and reflect the beam back into space (any electrically conductive material will reflect microwaves, like aircraft or spacecraft are made of). The maximum intensity is estimated at around 100 Watts per square meter per GHz to avoid ionospheric heating. Our system due to the chain of efficiencies from sunlight is a maximum of 233 W/m^2 at the transmitter, or just under a quarter of summer sunlight. Microwaves are just photons like light, and our bodies absorb their energy as heat. Flora and fauna on Earth can all handle incident energy of sunlight intensity. So even if someone climbed the fence around the receiver, and walked the kilometer to the center and stood on top of the receiving antennas - the intensity would still be something they could handle for long periods of time. Workers can wear conductive personal protective equipment and not be exposed to any intensity at all. This is why we allow microwave ovens as access is controlled and humans can't be accidently hurt. To receive a commercial broadcast license, we need to keep the intensity outside the fence line to below 10 W/m^2 - which we can do easily. We think one of SBSP's challenges is managing the migrant birds who will perch on the receivers in winter to stay warm. #SBSP #Spacesolar #solar

OMG!!! I was blown away by this idea that I came to know just now. With such innovation I really feel that there is a lot to achieve by the humans for the mankind. Yes now sunlight will be sold 🤔🤔🤔 what!!! It's shockingly true. #reflectorbital will be selling sunlight to the humans. They deployed 57 satellites with 33 sq feet reflectors integrated with the application or some sort of software to bring the sunlight from the reflectors at the dark areas on earth. This may change the whole scenario 1. there is a possibility of organically produced eatables 2. there will be unlimited solar energy available to us. 3. there will be controlled temperature in some extreme cold spaces. and so on.... But this will also bring the light pollution and the disturbance to the night time creatures... but still whatever it be.. This idea is #genius #thought #technology #future

Dear Mr. Talat, Thanks for bringing up these pressing issues concerning the environmental implications of satellite communication. You are right that although satellite technology has bridged the divide between the digital and the global worlds and yielded substantial benefits, it also poses environmental challenges that need to be addressed. It is called the "satellite graveyard" because of the problem of space debris. A buildup of dead satellites and other debris in orbit may pose hazards to operational satellites and space missions. Improvements have been going on through better designs for satellites, good end-of-life disposal practices, and active debris removal technologies. While emissions of aluminum oxide at the time of satellite de-orbiting are a concern regarding terrestrial and atmospheric pollution, this would lead to ozone layer depletion, making UV radiation levels higher, thus harming living organisms. To mitigate this, space industries are looking into alternative materials and techniques for launching satellites to reduce as much environmental disturbance as possible. Even regulatory bodies are working to improve stiff guidelines on operations and the launch of satellites to ensure their sustainable operations. On one hand, because the development would impact a very small fraction of our atmospheric environment and because the day may soon arrive when we can develop satellite communication systems not severely damage this atmosphere, we are in a potential position to ameliorate many of the negative impacts while yet reaping the benefits of satellite communication. We all must ensure that our progress does not impair the health of our planet.

Though satellite communication has drastically improved the lives on the other side of the digital divide but its coming with a price by creating a satellite graveyard above us. From the terrestrial to the atmospheric pollution, the ozone layer depletion as a result of release of Aluminium Oxide once the satellite is deorbited after completing its useful life, would increase UV radiation levels gravely impacting human health. Are we disrupting the nature balance by going beyond the limits?
