I have seen this time to time, also heard from some of my friends, when applying for jobs, some VFX studios ask specific for VFX experience, and animation studios ask for feature anim background. Some very good rigging friends got rejected without an interview because of working in the other field for years. I personally think a good artist should be able to achieve different art style, I have worked with some artists in VFX coming from feature animation background, and they turns out to be some of the best riggers I ever worked with, and I also worked with some riggers in VFX for many years, still no clue how to meet production standard. To me the difference between VFX and anim is not that much, lots of techniques can be shared across, and could inspire each other, a good artist will always be good. But I could be wrong as I don't have any anim experience, curious to learn what others opinions on this topic, cheers 😎 Edit: I'm mainly talking about rigging, I can see transits to game is a bit harder because of game engine related stuff, but between VFX and Feature Animation, curious to hear everyone's experience and thoughts on this. This also leads to my second question, I hear some studios ask entry level riggers to have their reel in specifically Cartoony/Realistic style, and will pass that candidate if style not matching. To me, asking an entry level student to prepare 2 job-ready reel is unrealistic, especially consider most of them only get 2-3 years for study and working on reel in total. I would rather look more into potentials than judging by the style. Good deformation? good problem solver? etc.. Those are easy to tell no matter which style the reel it is. But again, I could be wrong, happy to hear everyone's though on this, cheers

Calling all budding Trainee VFX Junior Compositors. Get your reels ready! Two roles up for grabs; https://lnkd.in/ekyYkSzM. Top tips below; Hiring teams at Aardman are busy and compassionate people who love to match individuals with amazing career opportunities. We receive many, many applications, and frequently see basic mistakes that prevent candidates moving to the next stage. Here are some top tips that we hope will help you stand out from the crowd! 1/ Give yourself plenty of time to put together your application. 2/ Read, read, and read again the job description. What is the studio looking for and how well do your skills match the role? 3/ Make sure you tailor your application to the specific studio you are contacting and include any required key skills/level of experience/software knowledge and personal specifications. 4/ Keep all your contact details/reel information and passwords together in one place – your CV! 5/ Always include a covering letter. This gives you the opportunity to support your application and make it personal to you. Include one or two brief paragraphs about yourself and include what you do to support your creativity and passion for animation. 6/ Do your research about the company, people, projects, and policies. Dig deep and find something unique to mention in your covering letter. This shows interest and attention to detail. 7/Many roles require you to have a portfolio and/or reel. Make sure it is well-put together to highlight only your very best work that captures the viewer in the first 10 seconds, and demonstrates your skills, level of experience and personal style. 8/ For CG/VFX specific roles, make sure you include shot breakdowns. Detail your artistry and credit studio production names, “baking” text into a horizontal banner in each shot/sequence. For students who have collaborated on a group graduation film make sure you include your specific shots to showcase your individual skill. 9/ Test your reel link – make sure it works! If it is password protected remember to share the details and include it in all correspondence. 10/Don’t submit your application at the last minute or too near to the closing date as recruiting teams may interview as they go. Good Luck!

Hello everyone, Over the past year, our VFX industry has faced some significant challenges, including strikes and evolving demands. As someone with over a decade of experience, I want to share a bit of insight for those who are newer to the field or just starting their journey. My own career path has been a journey of continuous learning and adaptation. I began as a Roto artist, transitioned to a Paint artist, and then moved into compositing. Each of these roles provided me with unique skills and a deeper understanding of the VFX process. This evolution was crucial in shaping my expertise and career growth. For those of you who are earlier in your careers or considering different roles, I encourage you to embrace a mindset of continuous learning. Don’t hesitate to explore various facets of VFX, as each experience can significantly enhance your skill set and open new opportunities. Your journey may involve stepping into different roles and acquiring new skills, and that’s perfectly okay. It’s about growing and adapting in a dynamic industry. Feel free to share your thoughts or suggestions on how we can navigate these changes and support each other in our professional growth. Stay curious, keep learning, and support each other as we navigate these changes together. Best, Goutam Nelikanti ## Navigating Challenges and Growth in the VFX Industry ##

The last post got me thinking - all supervisors and producers in VFX come from various backgrounds. I myself started as a compositor and (between us) am terrible at animation. It doesn't necessarily mean that I need to rush to buy a new course (God knows I have too many unfinished ones), but if I were to work on a heavy animation project, it would be a great idea to have a strong Animation Supervisor to rely on. But there are (in theory) should be areas that VFX Supervisor must know well. Like... probably for all your projects you going to need compositing. And planning. With some budgeting. You also need to ingest material in the right color space and format (yes, that annoying ACES thing). And while in big companies there are dedicated people who cover all that, I believe a VFX Supervisor must, if not be able to do it themselves, at least understand what they are talking about, why they are making decisions towards one solution or another, and so on. Not every company will ask you to bid on projects, but it is a great skill to have. Some of us (me included) are lucky to have amazing producers on our side and can distance ourselves from the boring reality of numbers. But what if your producer is sick or leaves you for someone who can understand resources and planning? We kind of learn all this while navigating our careers, and I bet we have different techniques, strengths, and weak areas. Being a Sup is quite a big responsibility - people come to you with questions all day long, and you need to know the answers or at least pretend that you do and trust your gut (with creative stuff, not ACES, please!). Wouldn't it be great to have a resource, page, masterclass (don't say course) or "bible" with all the base-level information that can help cover areas like I mentioned? Yeah, I know about VES book and I read it, and it is amazing, (thank you VES people for doing that!), but oh my god, the weight of this book makes it not user-friendly. Tips and tricks with small lines of code, automatic spreadsheets, examples of successful implementation of AI tools and so on? I would pay to have access to resource like this! (but of course it should be free). #vfx #cgi #vfxsupervisor #insouleffects #lovevfx

What do you want to be when you grow up? An ANIMATOR! Okay so... you want to be a: ▶ Character animator ▶ Motion Designer ▶ VFX artist ▶ Display graphics engineer ▶ Camera operator ▶ 2D animator ▶ Stop motion animator ▶ the list goes on... It cracks me up how I keep learning about new animation jobs and how diverse, yet niche this industry is. I didn't even know what display graphics where until I met the creative director of Twisted Media which specializes solely in creating and animating graphics that go on screens or for Hud representation. The animation industry is too cool! #motiondesign #motiongraphics #animation
