Last month, a consortium of media giants unveiled plans for a new streaming service that is expected to make sports watching simpler. The streamer, which is scheduled to go live this fall, will bundle ESPN+ with 14 sports-heavy channels owned by its parents—Fox, Disney’s ESPN and Warner Bros. Discovery. The companies have yet to come up with a name or disclose a price for the service, but news of its creation sent shock waves through the sports and media worlds. Sports has never been more crucial to the survival of traditional television: Of the 100 most-watched broadcasts in 2023, sports accounted for a whopping 96, according to Nielsen. The popularity of sports has led some observers to proclaim that the planned sports-streaming service would deal the final blow to traditional television, while others have brushed off the effort as a half-baked attempt to fix Americans’ long-broken sports-viewing experience. The new service will essentially be an online, heavily curated version of a cable bundle. It will carry entire channels such as ESPN, Fox and ABC, but won’t offer regional sports networks that are crucial to many fans. Its monthly cost could approach $50, The WSJ previously reported. The question is whether consumers will find that appealing when they can buy a fuller online cable bundle such as YouTube TV for $73 a month—getting the 14 channels included in the news sports-streaming package plus dozens of others such as CNN, CBS, NBC and Bravo.

Cord-cutters will soon be able to watch nearly all major sports without paying for 100+ channels but only if you are willing to pay $50 to $60/mo. just for sports channels only, starting in the Fall of 2025. You might want to also consider LIVE streaming apps like Hulu, YouTube, Prime, etc. if others want more than just sports channels, as these live streaming apps also featuring many live sports programming today. Note: As of March 8. Share based on rights paid by the companies behind the service or their parents for sports content available on streaming platforms. Paramount+ share is for Paramount+ with Showtime tier and excludes some college-sports content. NFL data include regional in-market games and exclude Sunday Ticket. Disney, Fox and Warner Bros. Discovery’s new service will offer access to most major sports content, and the vast majority of sports content not available there can be found on two separate streaming platforms: Paramount+ and Peacock. Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV+ own the remainder of National Football League and Major League Baseball rights, respectively. The question now is whether consumers will find the new service—essentially an online, heavily curated version of a cable bundle—appealing when they can buy fuller online cable bundles elsewhere.

This year's WNBA tv/streaming schedule is a time machine into the future of what "television" is going to look like when the current rights deals for sports, awards shows and scripted TV sunset. -- Mix of broadcast, cable, subscription streaming, FAST channels and live broadcasts on Meta -- Shared broadcast rights for some games on both RSNs and subscription streaming services -- League pass (via subscription) for all out of market games Here's how the WNBA tried to sum it up as succinctly as possible: "The television and streaming schedule for the league’s 28th season features matchups across ESPN platforms (25 games, including nine on ABC, 14 on ESPN and two on ESPN2), CBS Television Network/Paramount+ (eight), CBS Sports Network (12), ION (43), NBA TV (40) and Prime Video (21). Additional information will be made available regarding Meta’s 20-game broadcast schedule and the schedule for other distributors." "In addition, ESPN platforms ABC, ESPN and ESPN2 – now in their 28th year of WNBA coverage – will broadcast every game of the WNBA Playoffs presented by Google, which will feature up to 27 games, including the WNBA Finals presented by YouTube TV."

About 18% of TV/Digital Video is traded on media currencies defined by MRC, the other 82% is defined by Numeris. However, as media properties move from linear to streaming (story below) the MRC currency universe grows while the Numeris universe erodes. It's not about the size of the overall audience or time "tuned". It's about moving from GRP currency to Impression currency which severs the content metric from the ad metric.
Big changes are afoot for live sports, say media buyers

All Fubo is asking for is getting a fair deal. We’ve been competing with the sports cartel with intertwined business interests where one business units pays another in underhanded way. Fubo doesn’t have UGC ad inventory or cloud credits to give out. Networks don’t own equity in the company. If given the same deal as cable operators like Comcast or Verizon, Fubo can thrive and out compete anyone in this space. Fubo is the only content distributor fully aligned with consumers and we are having to compete with significantly worse business deals. We’re having to enter the octogon with 20kg weight deficit, but still punching way above our weight. Remove the restrictions and we can beat everyone in this fight for consumers.
Today, Fubo is fighting back against the sports cartel who we believe has engaged in a years-long campaign to block our sports-first streaming business. Its latest play? To steal our playbook via the formation of a sports streaming joint venture. We are standing up for our business and for consumers who deserve the option to choose the sports streaming service that's right for them, and at a fair price. We'll share more this week on how you can support our #SaveMySports fight. https://lnkd.in/eymRFKer
